DETROIT - In their 15th NCAA Tournament appearance, the Grand Valley State women's tennis team fell in the first round of the Midwest Regional Tournament toNorthwood 5-3 on Saturday (May 2).
GVSU, ranked 40th in Division II and as the No. 5 seed in the region, finish the 2014-15 season with a 22-7 overall record. Northwood, the 41st ranked team in the country and the No. 4 seed in the region, is now 18-2 on the year and advances to the next round to face top-seeded Wayne State.
The Timberwolves opened the match by taking two of the three doubles matches. The No. 2 pairing of

Alexa Sweeney fell 8-5, while

Morgan Patterson dropped the No. 3 flight 8-4.

Kali Phillips kept it from being a doubles sweep by winning the No.1 flight 9-8 after the Lakers fought for the tiebreaker point.
In singles action, Northwood took the first two flights before capturing the No. 4 flight to win the match. Orna won the No. 3 match in after forcing a tiebreaker (2-6, 6-2, 6-3), and
Abby Perkins was up in the No, 5 flight before the match ended early by virture of the Timberwolves earning the minimum five team points to take the match.
