#17 Lakers Score 21 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Lake Erie

GVSU swept a GLIAC doubleheader for the third time this season

Allendale, Mich. – Offense ruled the first two legs of the Grand Valley State baseball team's four-game series with Lake Erie, powering it to 11-1 and 10-3 victories. The No. 17 Lakers totaled 26 hits, and the 21 runs were their most in a doubleheader since scoring 25 runs in a twinbill with Hillsdale last season (March 26).

While the club's offensive production headlined the day, its pitching staff was effective as well.

Game one starter Patrick Kelly, now 4-1 on the year, yielded one run on five hits in his second consecutive 7-inning complete game. A pair of doubles in the seventh inning resulted in the Storm's lone run, ending Kelly's scoreless innings streak at 30.2. In the nightcap, starter Aaron Jensen hurled 5.2 innings and surrendered just three runs on five hits. The Big Rapids, Michigan native fanned seven batters, his second-highest strikeout total as a Laker, improving to 4-2.

Relievers Jordan Drake and Adam Poel combined for the other 3.1 innings of work in the 9-inning affair. The duo held Lake Erie scoreless and only gave up two hits.

Runs came in bunches for GVSU in the opener. The Lakers plated four runs in the fourth and a seven-spot in the sixth, matching their highest single-inning total of the season.

With junior first baseman Josh Griffith on second and senior Aaron Overbeck at first, junior catcher John McLaughlin singled down the left field line, bringing in the first run. A double to right center by senior third baseman Mitchell Kozlowski brought in another, and two more came across on a fielding error.

The flurry of hits and runs in the sixth began with another single by Kozlowski. After senior outfielder Mike Nadratowski singled and senior second baseman Jesse Abel walked, senior outfielder Jamie Potts delivered an RBI single to left field, keeping the bases loaded. Back-to-back walks by sophomore utility player Matt Williams and freshman infielder Josh Smith led to two more runs. Overbeck's two-RBI double to right center extended the scoring, which Kozlowski capped with his second single of the inning.

Kozlowski finished the game 4-for-4, recording the first four-hit outing of his career. The Madison Heights, Michigan product also had two RBIs and a run. Nadratowski and Overbeck each went 2-for-4 with two runs.

Redshirt senior shortstop Kevin Zak ended the game 2-for-3, which lifted his career hit total to 269, passing Ashland's Jacob Petkac for the third-most in GLIAC history.

GVSU spread its scoring around in the second contest, plating runs in the first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Abel's solo home run accounted for the only run in the first. Junior outfielder Jason Ribecky belted a solo homer to lead off the second, and Kozlowski came through with yet another RBI single to make it 3-0. The Lakers manufactured their three runs in the fourth via two singles, a walk, fielding error and sacrifice fly.

Lake Erie came back with two runs in the fifth, but GVSU responded with a pair in the bottom half. An attempt to turn two with the bases loaded produced both runs, netting freshman Connor Glick an RBI. Zak's two-run homer, his sixth of the season, produced the team's final runs of the day.

Overbeck posted a 3-for-4, two-run stat line, combining to go 5-for-8 with four runs and two RBIs in the doubleheader. Kozlowski's 2-for-4 line allowed him to end the doubleheader 6-for-8 with two runs and three RBIs. Potts went 2-for-4 in game two, extending his hitting streak to seven games.

GVSU's third GLIAC doubleheader sweep lifts its overall record to 18-11, and brings its league record to 10-6.

Another doubleheader between the two clubs is slated for Sunday (April 12) afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. EDT.
