Langs' Walk-Off Single Helps Lakers Split at Walsh

Cavaliers take the opener (4-0) before GVSU wins the nightcap (1-0)

Each team tossed a shutout on Sunday afternoon (Mar. 29) in North Canton, Ohio, as Grand Valley State and Walsh split a GLIAC doubleheader. Game one went to the home Cavaliers, who earned the 4-0 victory. The Lakers responded with a 1-0 win in game two, anchored by a shutout from freshman Courtney Reinhold and a game-winning single from sophomore Janae Langs.

It was the fourth and fifth games in the last four days for GVSU, while Walsh had not played since Mar. 4 in Florida. The weather was again not ideal - listed in the upper 30's and lower 40's for the two contests - but the teams battled through the elements for a split.

Grand Valley State is now 16-6 on the season and 2-1 in GLIAC play. Walsh moves to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in league action.

Both team's success was based on Walsh pitcher Casi Rohr. The senior, who was an All-GLIAC First Team honoree last year, tossed all 14 innings in the circle for the Cavaliers. In game one, she was nearly unhittable, giving up just two hits and striking out eight batters in the win. GVSU was finally able to get to Rohr in the final inning of game two, with Langs' one-out, walk-off single scoring junior teammate Chelsea Horvath.

Most of Walsh's offense in the opener came in the second inning off Laker starter Sara Andrasik. The Cavaliers plated three runs, including a big two-run double, to open up a 3-0 advantage. Walsh closed the scoring with an RBI single in the fifth inning for the 4-0 cushion.

Rohr retired the first 10 batters she faced before hitting freshman Teagan Shomin with a pitch in the top of the fourth inning. On Saturday against Malone, Shomin set the GVSU record for hit by pitches in a single season. Sunday's plunking was her ninth of the year.

Shomin, however, was stranded at first base and the Lakers did not record a hit until Marianne Deppe's leadoff single in the sixth. Sophomore Jenna Lenza also singled in the seventh for GVSU's other hit.

Andrasik suffered the loss, falling to 5-3 on the season. She gave up three runs on four hits in 2.1 innings. Sophomore lefty Ellie Balbach pitched 3.2 innings in relief, giving up one run on three hits. Balbach struck out five Cavaliers.

Neither team provided much offense in game two, though much of that was due to the pitchers in the circle. Reinhold used a double play to get out of the first inning and worked around a two-on, two-out jam in the third frame.

A leadoff single by the Cavaliers in the sixth inning turned into runners on first and second base with two outs, but Reinhold induced a groundout to get out of the inning.

Reinhold retired all three Walsh hitters in the top of the seventh to set up the dramatics in the bottom half of the seventh. Horvath tallied her second hit of the day - a one-out single to left field - before stealing second base. She moved to third base on a pinch hit single from freshman AJ Castle.

That brought up Langs, who notched the game-winning single to score Horvath and give the Lakers their fourth one-run victory of the season.

It was the team's first walk-off win of the year and the first since May 2, 2014, when Miranda Cleary's RBI single scored Kelsey Dominguez in a 2-1 victory over Northwood in the GLIAC Tournament.

Reinhold moved to 6-2 on the season with the complete game shutout. She allowed five hits and two walks, while striking out five Cavaliers. It was Reinhold's second shutout this season, also tossing a five-hitter in a 6-0 win over Post on Mar. 3. Rohr gave up five hits in 6.1 innings, dropping to 4-3 this year.

Horvath (2-for-3) was the lone Laker with more than one hit. Castle, Langs, and Lenza all notched a base hit in game two.

The Lakers return to Allendale on Tuesday (Mar. 31) for a doubleheader against Wayne State. Game times are set for 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. The doubleheader will be aired live on XFinity Channel 900.
