ALLENDALE, Mich. - Just two days after being held to single-digit goals for only the second time all season, the Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team exploded for their second-highest goal total of 2015 in a 16-5 romp over Fort Lewis. The win improves Grand Valley State's record to 4-4 on the year, while the loss puts Fort Lewis at 5-2.
Following a sloppy first 10 minutes of play,
Victoria Devine connected with
Brooke Ingraham for the opening goal at 20:43. The Skyhawks answered right back just 10 seconds later, but Grand Valley State reeled off three straight goals to jump out to a 4-1 lead.
Sarah Lowe tallied two assists to
Zoe Stiemann and
Meghan Datema, while
Erika Neumen scored an unassisted goal during the run.
Back-to-back unassisted scores by Fort Lewis narrowed the Lakers' lead to one, but it would be the closest the opposition would get to evening the score as GVSU found the back of the net twice more to go up by three.
Rachel Leibovitz scored her first goal of the contest at 7:59, and she then assisted on Neumen's second goal of the half over a minute later to put the score at 6-3 in favor of the home squad going into the halftime.
Kira Dosenberry resumed the scoring after taking a
Ryan Skomial pass and burying it past the Fort Lewis goalkeeper at 28:09. Fort Lewis would score less than a minute later to make it a three-goal lead for the Lakers, and that would end up being the last Skyhawk goal until 2:26 of the half. A goal by Ingraham from Neumen shortly following a Fort Lewis yellow card kicked off a run of eight unanswered scores to put Grand Valley State comfortably ahead. Ingraham assisted on a goal by
Carolyn Kraus, while Neumen and Dosenberry tallied consecutive unassisted goals to widen the score to 11-4.
Neumen tickled the twine at 11:41 and again at 8:09, both times with Skomial for the assist, and
Jordan Luberto connected with Leibovitz for the senior's second goal of the contest to put the Laker lead at 10 goals, enforcing the running clock rule. Neumen's sixth and final score of the contest gave GVSU an 11-goal advantage with a little over five minutes to go in the game. The Skyhawk goal at 2:26 put an end to the run of unanswered goals, but freshman
Molly McGeeney's first career collegiate goal kept the margin of victory at 11 for the Lakers.
Neumen's seven points (6 g, 1 a) were tops for both teams, making it the seventh time she's led the team in scoring and points. This also marks the third time Neumen has scored five or more goals in a single game, and the first since dropping six on Le Moyne on March 9. The young midfielder also tallied three draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers, as she continues to tear apart opposing defenses in her first year wearing a Laker uniform.
Skomial's three assists were a team best, and her three draw controls tied her with Neumen for best on the team. Dosenberry,
Ashley Bailey, and
Caitlin Wojichowski led the team with four ground balls each, and Dosenberry caused a game-high six Skyhawk turnovers, tying a program-record originally set by Allyson Fritz against Urbana in April 2013. In her fourth win of the season,
Sarah Zwilsky made nine saves, six of them coming in the first half, and scooped up one ground ball.
The Lakers outshot Fort Lewis (33-17), picked up more ground balls (30-21), pulled down more draw controls (13-10), committed fewer turnovers (19-23), and limited the Skyhawks to going just 12-23 on clears while going 21-26 themselves.
Grand Valley State is on the road for their next four games, beginning on April 1 against Wheeling Jesuit (2-3) at 7 p.m. and ending on April 10 against GLIAC foe Ursuline (0-5) at 5 p.m. The Lakers return to GVSU Lacrosse/Track & Field Stadium on Sunday (Apr. 12) for their conference home opener against McKendree (7-1) at noon.
