Lakers Hang 21 on the Scoreboard, Blow Out Wheeling Jesuit

WHEELING, W.Va. – Behind an eight point outing from Brooke Ingraham, the Grand Valley State women's lacrosse cruised to a dominating 21-6 victory over Wheeling Jesuit (3-4) on Thursday in the final road non-conference game of the season.

The teams traded goals to open the first half of play, with Ingraham and Ryan Skomial tallying the first goals of the game for GVSU, while Jessie Tufnell and Elizabeth Hales combined for the first three goals for Wheeling Jesuit to put the Cards up by one early in the half.

An ensuing six goal run, keyed by the third and fourth goals of the evening for Ingraham, put the visiting Lakers up for the remainder of the game. Meghan Datema's second goal of the season, sandwiched between two tallies by Victoria Devine, then followed by Skomial's second goal of the half gave the Lakers a five-goal advantage before WJU ended the half with a goal at 5:09, putting the score at 8-4 going into the break.

Devine tickled the twine two more times to open the second half, and goals from Kira Dosenberry and Rachel Leibovitz put the team up by seven before the Cards scored their final goal of the contest at 18:04 of the second half.

The Grand Valley State offense put the game away for good midway through the second half, with a run of nine unanswered goals. Ingraham scored her fourth and fifth goals of the contest, while Erika Neumen notched all four of her goals during the run that lasted the remaining 17:46 as the Lakers rolled to their third straight road win of the 2015 campaign.

Ingraham's five goals and three assists were game-highs for the Lakers (5-4), who also benefited from four goals by Neumen and Devine. Dosenberry and Sarah Lowe dished out two assists each, while Neumen paced the defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers, and Datema pitched in four draw control victories in the win. Sarah Zwilsky tallied a career-best 13 saves in the win, with eight stops coming in the first half while allowing six goals in all 60 minutes of action.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Elizabeth Hales with three goals and Jessie Tufnell with two. Paige Plesich tallied the long Wheeling Jesuit assist in the blowout loss, while Maire Austin made seven saves in 60 minutes between the pipes.

GVSU outshot Wheeling Jesuit (38-23), won more draw controls (17-11) and committed fewer turnovers (23-16) for the second consecutive game, while going a perfect 13-13 in clears.

Grand Valley State hits the field again on Thursday (Apr. 2) when they open GLIAC play against Alderson-Broaddus (1-6) at 7 p.m.
