#18 Lakers Drop Pair of GLIAC Games at Ohio Dominican

GVSU left 13 runners on base in its extra-inning loss to the Panthers

Columbus, Ohio – A day after taking two games from Ohio Dominican, the Grand Valley State baseball team found itself on the wrong side of a doubleheader sweep on Sunday (March 22). The No. 18 Lakers mustered just two hits in game one, and left 13 runners on base in game two, dropping their overall record to 10-7 and GLIAC mark to 2-2.

GVSU's bats, which have been explosive for much of the season, were silent in a 7-0 loss that opened the day.

A double by senior outfielder Jamie Potts in the first inning and Connor Glick's single in the third inning were the only Laker hits against Ohio Dominican's Ryan Colegate. The double was the 37th of Potts' career, tying him with Giancarlo Brugnoni for the ninth-most in school history.

The only other notable play for GVSU came on a routine groundball in the first inning. This was not just any routine grounder, though. It was a major milestone for redshirt senior second baseman Kevin Zak. The Novi, Michigan native fielded the ball cleanly and threw out the runner at first, recording the 472nd assist of his career and breaking Tony Pfennig's school record, one that was set back in 2003.

As for the scoring, Ohio Dominican plated three runs in the first, one in the third and three more in the sixth. Redshirt junior Tim Tarter took the loss after five innings of work; he is 0-1 in two starts this season.

The offense returned in the nightcap, as the Lakers produced 11 hits. However, it went quiet in the most important moments, leaving 13 runners on base in a 5-4 extra-inning loss.

GVSU did grab a lead in the fourth inning, though. After the Panthers scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third, the Lakers scored twice to erase the deficit. Junior outfielder Jason Ribecky led things off with a single, and senior designated hitter Jesse Abel walked to put two aboard with no outs. Following a sacrifice bunt by John McLaughlin, a wild pitch scored Ribecky. Senior outfielder Mike Nadratowski proceeded to drive in another run on a grounder to first on the first pitch of GVSU's next at bat.

Ohio Dominican cut down a two-out rally in the sixth, and a two-run homer allowed it to regain the lead in the bottom half of the frame. A sacrifice bunt in the seventh by Troy Evans brought another run across for the Panthers.

Things looked grim for the Lakers, until the eighth inning, when singles by Ribecky and McLaughlin gave Nadratowski a chance to knot the score. The Canton, Michigan native came through, clearing the bases with a two-RBI double.

In extras, GVSU had its best chance in the 11th inning, when it loaded the bases with two outs.

First, Potts and Zak singled to keep the inning alive. Then freshman shortstop Josh Smith drew a walk on nine pitches to put Lakers at every base. A popup ended the threat, and, as it turned out, GVSU's last chance at a split.

A walk and two hit batsmen set up Ohio Dominican's game-winning fielder's choice.

GVSU will look to bounce back this Tuesday at St. Joseph's (Ind.). First pitch in Rensselaer, Indiana is scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT.
