Game NotesAllendale, Mich.-- It will have been nearly two weeks since the Grand Valley women's basketball team last played when they take the court on Saturday against the Warriors of Wayne State. Working to their favor is the way they finished the 2015 calendar year, with a 111-37 drubbing of UM-Dearborn at GVSU Fieldhouse Arena on December 20
th. As they return to GLIAC play, the Lakers will look to replicate their success on offense from last game.
Against the Wolverines, GVSU shot 50 percent from the field for the first time all season, including 39 percent from beyond the arc, connecting on 15 triples. Grand Valley is fourth in Division II in made three pointers per game, averaging ten makes per contest. Against UM-Dearborn, guard
Lindsay Baker was 8-15 from the field, all three pointers, to lead the team with 24 points. Four other Lakers ended in double figures, but the day belonged to the Lakers bench, which outscored the starting lineup 74-37. Scoring from the bench has been valuable to Grand Valley all season, as it's bench has outscored the opposing bench, 249-143.
On Saturday, the Lakers will square off against an inconsistent Wayne State squad (6-4 overall, 1-3 GLIAC), which has struggled to string together quality games this season. The Warriors give up slightly more points to opponents than they score themselves (66.5-65.6), but have held opponents to just 37 percent from the field on the season, converting on 44 percent of their own shots on offense. Brittany Streetman (14.0 points per game) and Shannon Wilson (12.3 points per game) lead the Warriors offensively, as well as accruing 22 and 20 steals, respectively, on defense.
As a team, the Warriors have shot a paltry 63 percent from the free throw line, and in conference games that figure has slipped to 52 percent. Conversely, the Lakers have done well at the charity stripe this season, converting on 72 percent of their tries, including a superlative team mark of 85 percent in the Dearborn contest.
On Sunday, the Lakers will face stiff competition in the form of the 9-1 Findlay. The Oilers are a perfect 4-0 in conference, and have compiled a +13.7 scoring margin this season, allowing just 58.5 points per game on defense while averaging 72.2 on offense per contest. Three Oilers average double digit points, led by guard Haley Horstman and her 12.5 points per game. Findlay shoots an efficient 47 percent from the field, good for third best in the conference.
Offensively, a telling factor for the Laker's success this season has been the ability to pass around and find the open looks. In the seven games where Grand Valley has had more assists than their opponent, they are 7-0. In the other three games, the Lakers finished with less assist than their opponents, and as a result, lost all three games. On the season, the Lakers are +30 in assist-turnover ratio, while opponents are a -74 versus Grand Valley.
Tip off for both Saturday and Sunday's games is set for 1 p.m at GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
