Lakers Top 100-Point Plateau in Rout of Olivet

GVSU scores most points (105) since Jan. 13, 2003 against Michigan-Dearborn

The Grand Valley State men's basketball team notched its highest-scoring output in a game in 12 years, as the Lakers dominated Olivet on Friday night (Nov. 20) to the tune of a 105-57 victory in Allendale. GVSU led 47-32 at halftime, but poured in 58 points over the final 20 minutes to surpass the 100-point plateau for the first time since 2010.

With the win, the Lakers improve to 3-0 and all three victories have come at home, as GVSU continues its season-opening seven-game homestand. Olivet, a Division III opponent, drops to 0-4 on the year.

Offensively, Grand Valley State was tremendous, finishing the game with a 56.9 field goal percentage and the Lakers connected on 9-of-22 three-point attempts. GVSU also made 22-of-29 free throw tries. The Lakers had incredible edges in the paint (54-10) and in bench points (63-17), not to mention advantages in points off turnovers (30-13), fast break points (12-0), and second chance points (12-7).

Five GVSU players reached double figures, while three more players scored at least eight points. Junior Luke Ryskamp led the way with 17 points in just 18 minutes, while senior Ricardo Carbajal and freshman Zach West each posted 13 points. Junior transfer Juwan Starks made his first appearance as a Laker and totaled 12 points in 13 minutes, while sophomore Sam McClendon scored a career-high 11 points.

The 105 points was the most scored by Grand Valley State in 12 years. On Jan. 13, 2003, the Lakers defeated Michigan-Dearborn by a 105-62 final in Allendale. GVSU had not reached 100 points in a game since defeating Tiffin 101-76 on Dec. 4, 2010.

Grand Valley State was still nowhere near a school record, as the Laker program record for points in a game is 133 on Dec. 20, 1979 against Roosevelt in a 133-65 rout.

Friday night's game looked nothing like a rout in the early minutes, as Olivet actually led 12-9 just over seven minutes into the first half. GVSU regained the lead and was on top 25-24 at the 7:16 mark when a huge 12-0 run opened up the contest. Two free throws from senior Chaz Rollins began the 12-point surge, which was followed by layups from McClendon and Ryskamp, a West three-pointer, and a Ryskamp triple. With 5:12 to go after Ryskamp's trifecta, it was 37-24.

Junior Trevin Alexander and Starks each nailed three-pointers late in the half to take a 47-32 advantage into halftime. The Lakers shot 54.5 percent from the field in the first half, holding Olivet to a 38.5 percent clip.

GVSU's lead eclipsed 20 points on an early layup and free throw from Ryskamp in the second half, while consecutive layups from Carbajal and West pushed the score to 71-38. The highlight of the game was Alexander throwing down a big two-handed fast break dunk moments before West buried a triple try that pushed the advantage out to 78-41 with 11:20 remaining.

Five points in 28 seconds from Starks upped the cushion to 91-47 at the 6:06 mark and the Lakers passed the 100-point mark on a layup from Drake Baar with just over two minutes to play.

In the second half, GVSU shot 59.4 percent from the floor and limited Olivet to a 17.9 percent clip in the final 20 minutes, including a 3-for-13 mark from beyond the arc.

Rollins finished with eight points and eight boards in just 20 minutes, while Alexander added eight points, a team-high four assists, four rebounds, two steals, and a block. Hayes scored nine points in 15 minutes, freshman Justin Greason supplied a game-high nine boards, six points, and two rejections, and West recorded three thefts. McClendon's 23 minutes were the most of any Laker, as 13 different GVSU players saw time on the floor, with 12 of them scoring in the game.

The Lakers will be back in action on Monday night (Nov. 23) against Grace Bible. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. inside the Fieldhouse Arena.
