#18 GVSU Claims 38-21 Win Over #9 Michigan Tech

#18 Grand Valley State claimed a 38-21 victory over #9 Michigan Tech Saturday night before a crowd of 10,072 at Lubbers Stadium. GVSU improves to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in GLIAC action, while MTU falls to 5-1 both overall and in league action. GVSU, which claimed its 200th win in Lubbers Stadium, will host Findlay at home for Homecoming next Saturday (Oct. 24). 

Michigan Tech took a first quarter lead, driving 80 yards in 12 plays for a TD at the 4:34 mark of the first quarter. However, GVSU would reel off 24 consecutive points to take a 24-7 halftime lead. GVSU limited Michigan Tech to  59 total yards on its five drives following the first drive TD. The Lakers answered the Huskies' opening drive TD with an 8-play, 72-yard touchdown drive of its own. Sophomore QB Bart Williams completed four passes for 75 yards, including two to sophomore WR Brandon Bean for 44 yards and two to senior WR Jamie Potts for 31 yards and a 17 yard TD catch. GVSU added its second TD Williams to Bean 11 yard TD pass and catch. Williams hit freshman WR Nick Dodson with a 52 yard pass to set up the Bean TD. The Lakers added a 34 yard field goal off the foot of junior place kicker Joel Schipper to culminate an 8-play, 41-yard drive and closed the first half with a 3-play, 31-yard TD drive. Junior LB David Talley picked off a Brandon Cowie pass and redshirt freshman RB Marty Carter carried the ball the final 18 yards for a TD and Schipper added his third PAT of the night for a 24-7 GVSU lead. 

Michigan Tech possessed the ball for 12:44 of the third quarter but could not score. The Huskies did score early in the fourth quarter, but the Lakers answered quickly with a 3-play, 55-yard TD drive. Senior RB Kirk Spencer returned the kickoff 40 yards and on third-and-four Williams hit Potts on a quick out pattern that Potts took 49 yards for a TD. MTU continued to battle and drove 75 yards in 12 plays for a TD to pull within 10 points (31-21). The Laker defense stopped a fourth down attempt and the offense drove 39 yards in five plays for a TD. Spencer hit TE Nick Keizer with a 3 yard pass and Schipper kicked his final PAT of the night for a 38-21 GVSU lead. 

Michigan Tech entered the game as one of the leading rushing defensive teams in the country (78.4 ypg), but GVSU toted the ball 25 times for 139 yards and one TD. Spencer led the ground game with 103 yards on 13 carries and returned four kickoffs for 78 yards. Marty Carter toted the ball six times for 38 yards and a TD. Bart Williams completed 16-of-26 passes for 280 yards and three TDs. Sophomore WR Brandon Bean led the receiving corps with five catches for 57 yards, followed by Potts' three catches for 80 yards, Matt Williams three for 52 and Spencer three for 28. 

Junior LB David Talley recorded 18 tackles for the Lakers, the fifth best total in GVSU football history, while Marquez Gollman added 17 stops, the sixth-best total in Laker annals. Sophomore Colling Schlosser chipped in 15 stops. Matt Judon continued to add to his season and career sack totals. Judon recorded four tackles, two QB sacks (-19) and two TFL (-19).

Notes...Grand Valley State rushed for 139 yards against a Michigan Tech defense that entered the game yielding just 78.6 yards rushing per game...GVSU managed 422 total yards versus a defense that was limiting opponents to 287.2 yards per game...Senior DE Matt Judon added two more QB sacks to his 2015 total (11.5) and is now sixth on the GVSU single-season list. In addition, Judon is now second in career forced fumbles (7), sixth in career QB sacks (25.5) and 10th in all-time tackles for loss (40.5).
