Rebounding Woes Cost Lakers at Hillsdale

GVSU fell to 8-5 when being outrebounded by an opponent this season

Hillsdale, Mich. -- Rebounding has been a struggle much of this season for the undersized Grand Valley State women's basketball team. Saturday (Jan. 31) afternoon at Hillsdale, the Lakers were outrebounded 48-30, and 13-5 on the offensive glass, leading to a 73-57 loss. The setback ends a three-game winning streak and drops GVSU into a tie with Northern Michigan for second place in the GLIAC North Division.

Aside from Taylor Lutz's game-tying triple at the 19:17 mark, the Lakers trailed for the entire game. They managed to stay within five points for nearly four minutes, but they never recovered from the 7-0 Hillsdale run that followed.

Sophomore forward Kayla Dawson led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. The De Pere, Wis. native also collected five rebounds, handed out two assists and nabbed three steals.

Junior guard Brionna Barnett, who had scored at least 20 points in GVSU's last two games, poured in 12 points. Sophomore forward Piper Tucker was the only other Laker in double figures. The East Lansing High School product went 4-of-7 from the field. She grabbed six boards as well.

Sophomore guard Taylor Lutz tallied nine points and snared a season-high six rebounds. No other GVSU player finished with more than three points.

As a team, the Lakers shot 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the field. However, their 8-of-28 (28.6 percent) performance in the first half was too much to overcome.

GVSU, which is now 13-5 overall and 10-4 in GLIAC play, will look to bounce back on Monday (Feb. 2) against Ferris State. Tip off at the Fieldhouse Arena is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
