Lakers Regain Three-Point Stroke, Take Down Ferris State

GVSU made 11 three-pointers, its highest total since Nov. 29, 2014

Allendale, Mich. -- Home games have resulted in two things for the Grand Valley State women's basketball team this season: winning, and plenty of three-point baskets. Both held true again in Monday (Feb. 2) night's victory over Ferris State. The Lakers, who improved to 10-0 at home for the 2014-15 campaign, drained 11 triples, allowing them to tame the feisty Bulldogs.

Although GVSU shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the field, its success from beyond the arc made the biggest difference in the game. And it could not have come at a better time. After starting the season with at least 10 threes in their first four home games, the Lakers went cold from distance, failing to reach that plateau in any of their next five contests in Allendale.

Senior forward Kat LaPrairie found her long-range touch again as well. The Rockford, Michigan native hadn't made more than a trio of threes in a single game since Dec. 21, 2014. She sank four, three of which came in the second half, against the Bulldogs, finishing with a team-high 15 points.

One other Laker matched LaPairie's scoring output: Brionna Barnett. The sophomore guard totaled 15 points, a career-high eight rebounds and a game-high five assists. Three-point shooting was in her arsenal, too; Barnett was 3-of-6 from distance.

Right behind those two was sophomore forward Kayla Dawson, who scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting. The De Pere, Wisconsin product also collected five rebounds.

Sophomore guard Janae Langs' performance could not be overshadowed either. She racked up a career-best five rebounds and scored eight points, just two shy of matching her career high. Additionally, Langs dished out two assists, making it the fifth time in her two seasons she has done so.

Along with seven points and six rebounds, sophomore forward Piper Tucker set a career high of her own with four assists.

GVSU's victorious evening got off to a rather slow start. The Lakers struggled to find the bottom of the netting in the opening four minutes of action, which put them in a five-point hole. Barnett and Tucker went to work. After a layup by Langs, the two combined for a pair of threes, a layup and a mid-range jumper, boosting the Lakers out in front by seven (20-13) with the 12-0 run.

Christina Branch answered with a layup, but junior forward Jammie Botruff drained one of her two trifectas to give GVSU an eight-point edge, its largest of the half.

The Bulldogs cut the deficit to just two in the closing 78 seconds, only to see LaPrairie sink a triple and send the Lakers into halftime up 33-28.

Eventually seeing a 10-point lead dwindle to six, LaPrairie kicked it into high gear to put Ferris State away. She scored eight of GVSU's 15 points in the closing six-plus minutes. Her tear was highlighted by back-to-back threes inside the last three minutes of regulation.

The win, coupled with a Northern Michigan loss, gives GVSU sole possession of second place in the GLIAC North Division. The Lakers carry an 11-4 mark in league play and a 14-5 overall record.

GVSU, which now boasts the sixth-longest home winning streak in school history, will look to remain perfect at the Fieldhouse Arena against Northern Michigan on Thursday (Feb. 5). Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
