Game NotesOnly two women's basketball teams are undefeated through the first four games of GLIAC play: Grand Valley State and Michigan Tech. The two will not meet until later this month, but the No. 17 Lakers will square off with two GLIAC South foes looking to end their undefeated start to league play. Eleventh-ranked Wayne State, which leads the GLIAC South with a 3-1 mark in conference contests, and a feisty Findlay club are set to do battle with GVSU this weekend.
For the first time all season, the Lakers are coming off a loss. Despite a valiant effort at No. 2 Lewis on Dec. 21, GVSU could not muster enough baskets down the closing stretch, eventually falling 78-65 in Romeoville, Illinois. One thing working for the Lakers: they have not lost back-to-back games since the middle of last year, with three wins following their final three losses of the 2013-14 campaign.
As it has been for much of the year, GVSU's game plan will be to score from the perimeter and avoid turnovers. Among qualifying Division II clubs, it ranks sixth in three-point field goals per game (9.5), tied for 17th in three-point field goal percentage (39.6) and tied for 12th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.23).
This weekend will be all about defense, though. Wayne State and the Lakers are the GLIAC's top two teams in terms of opponent points per game. The Warriors yield a mere 56.1 points per game, while GVSU only surrenders 58.1 points.
Led by Shareta Brown, the conference's leading scorer (21.8 points per game) and rebounder (15.6 per game), Wayne State poses a significant threat at the offensive end of the floor. The Warriors lead the league with 76.6 points per contest and boast the conference's best field goal percentage (47.4). Much of the same could be said for Findlay. Although the Oilers don't have a top-10 scorer, they shoot 46.4 percent from the field. Only Wayne State is more efficient shooting the basketball.Â
Tip off for Friday's (Jan. 2) tilt at Wayne State is set for 5:30 p.m. The Lakers will then travel to Findlay on Sunday (Dec. 4) for a 1 p.m. start.
