Lakers Drop Close One to Wayne State

DETROIT – Grand Valley State concluded their three-match road trip with a close 5-4 loss to conference rival Wayne State on Sunday. The loss drops the Lakers to 4-1, while Wayne State improves to 7-0 on the season.

Wayne State picked up the first two singles matches, while Carola Orna won her fourth singles game of the year to put the Lakers on the board. Alexa Sweeney knotted the match at 2-2 with her win in the No. 4 spot, but Wayne State pulled ahead with a win in the No. 5 position. Kelly Trapp finished the singles action with a 7-5, 6-3 win in the No. 6 spot.

In doubles competition, the Warriors pulled away with wins in the #1 and #2 doubles spots. Morgan Patterson and Aimee Moccia kept the team from being swept in doubles, but it wasn't enough to pull out the win.

GVSU returns to the courts on Friday, Sept. 26, for the 2014 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championship, hosted by Grand Valley State.
