GVSU Records 64-60 GLIAC Road Win At Lake Erie In WBB Action

Lakers now 5-0 overall and 2-0 in GLIAC play

Box Score Grand Valley State claimed a 64-60 GLIAC road win Saturday afternoon at Lake Erie College. GVSU improves to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in GLIAC action, while the Storm falls to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in league action. GVSU will host Tiffin Sunday (Dec. 14) at 1 p.m. at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.

Neither team was able to gain much of an advantage in the opening nine minutes and GVSU took a 16-14 lead on a Kayla Dawson layup at the 11:07 mark of the first half. Sophomore guarrd Taylor Lutz hit a pair of free throws to give GVSU an 18-15 lead, followed by sophomore guard Piper Tucker's 3-pointer to give the Lakers a 21-15 lead. After a LEC bucket, Dawson hit another 3-pointer, followed by a Brionna Barnett bucket, a 3-pointer from Kat LaPrairie and a basket by Meryl Cripe that completed a 17-5 Laker run and gave GVSU a 31-19 lead. Leading 34-26 LaPrairie drilled a 3-pointer with eight seconds left in the first half to give Grand Valley State a 37-26 lead heading into the lockerroom.

GVSU maintained a 7-10 point cusion for the first 12 minutes of the second half, but a Lake Erie 3-pointer closed the gap to six points (47-41) with 8:31 left in the game. Four consecutive points pulled the Storm to within four (47-43), but Lutz hit a jumper and a pair of free throws to keep the Lakers in front by four (51-47). Tucker scored on a layup to give GVSU a 57-49 lead and following a pair of LEC free throws Dawson hit a free throw to give GVSU a 58-51 lead with 2:53 left. A free throw from Lutz was kept the GV lead at six (59-53), but a Storm layup and pair of free throws cut the Laker lead to two (59-57) with 1:22 left. 

The Laker defense got a stop and Barnett hit a free throw, followed by two from Dawson to give GVSU a 63-57 lead with 13 ticks left on the clock and seal the win. 

Dawson led the way for the Lakers with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Barnett added 15 points and five assists. Lutz chipped in 11 points, Tucker with seven and Laprairie and Cripe each with six. The Lakers held a 38-29 rebounding advantage.
