ALLENDALE, Mich. - The third-ranked Grand Valley State football team had its 12-game winning streak snapped on Saturday (Oct. 6), falling to Ferris State in the Anchor-Bone Classic by a final score of 40-24.

GVSU falls to 5-1 on the season with a 4-1 record in the GLIAC, while Ferris State moves to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

The Lakers got out of the gates quickly, scoring the first points of the game on a 34-yard touchdown pass from sophomore QB Isiah Grimes to junior WR Brandan Green with 8:38 to play in the first quarter. This followed a fumble by the Bulldogs by Torico Searcy that was forced and recovered by junior LB Charles Hill at the Laker 45 yard line.

On the ensuing kickoff, sophomore Ben Hutchins forced a fumble, again by Searcy, and redshirt freshman Kirk Spencer recovered the fumble at the Ferris State 25 yard line. Grimes capped the drive with a four-yard touchdown run on a bootleg to the right to put the Lakers up 14-0.

After a three-and-out by the Bulldogs, GVSU got three more on a 22-yard field goal from sophomore Marco Iaderosa to go up 17-0.

Ferris State answered with 17 straight points to tie the game up, but the Lakers responded with a 26-yard touchdown run by Spencer to make it a 24-17 game.

The Bulldogs were able to get a 32-yard field goal from Austin Kantola near the end of the half, as the Lakers went in to halftime leading 24-20.

Ferris State took the lead on its first play from scrimmage in the second half with a 70-yard touchdown run to go up 27-24, a lead that wouldn't be relinquished.

The Bulldogs added two more touchdown runs later in the third quarter to make it 40-24 and neither team could score in the fourth.

Spencer finished the game with 83 yards and a touchdown on eight carries (10.4 ypc), while sophomore Michael Ratay had 63 yards rushing on 15 carries, part of 175 rushing yards as a team by the Lakers.

Green caught five passes for 77 yards and a touchdown, while Ratay contributed 49 yards on three catches.

Defensively, Hill had a season-high 17 tackles, including 2.5 for loss (-6 yards), one forced fumble and one recovery. Redshirt freshman Brad Horling had 14 tackles, while junior Erik Thompson had 10 tackles, 0.5 for loss. Thompson also had 155 kick return yards on six returns (25.8 ypr).

The Lakers will be back on the field next Saturday (Oct. 13) for a 1:00 p.m. tilt in Marquette, Mich. to take on Northern Michigan.
