Marquette, Mich. - Grand Valley State dropped a 38-10 decision at Northern Michigan Saturday afternoon. GVSU falls to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in GLIAC action. The Lakers will host Northwood next Saturday (Oct. 20) at 7 p.m. in its annual homecoming game.

Northern Michigan went up 7-0 with a 7-play, 56-yard scoring drive on its first possession following a GVSU three-and-out. Casey Cotta went the final 11 yards for the score.

Laker defensive end Lucas Kozuch recovered a fumbled punt return by Northern Michigan on the Wildcat 21 yard line and Marco Iaderosa kicked a 37-yard field goal to get the Lakers on the scoreboard.

Junior LB Luther Ware forced a fumble on the GVSU 11 yard line that safety Dana Dixon recovered to thwart a Wildcat scoring opportunity. Brandon Beitzel hit Charles Johnson with a 30-yard completion on first down to get GVSU off its goal line. The GVSU offense stalled, but a Chris Picano 51-yard punt pinned Northern Michigan on its own 2-yard line. However, the Wildcats hit an 82-yard pass to the Laker 9-yard line and scored one play later as QB Cody Scepaniak hit Kelvin Stewart with a 9-yard TD pass.

The Laker defense forced a punt and took over on its own 30 yard line early in the second quarter. Kirk Spencer accounted for 69 rushing yards on the drive, highlighted by a 33-yard scamper. Spencer added runs of 14 and 11 yards on the drive. Junior RB Hersey Jackson, playing for the first time in 2012, scored from 1-yard out and Iaderosa added the PAT to pull the Lakers within a 14-10 score.

NMU's Rocky Belmonte kicked a 58-yard field goal with 15 seconds left in the first half to give the Wildcats a 17-10 lead heading into the lockerroom.

Trailing 17-10, Grand Valley State appeared to be getting the ball back in good field position, but a phantom running into the kicker call gave the Wildcats a first down midway through the third quarter. The Wildcats then drove for a TD that upped the lead to 24-10.

Northern Michigan added two fourth quarter touchdowns for the final margin.

Kirk Spencer rushed for 145 yards on 13 carries, while Brandon Beitzel, starting the first game of his career for the injured Isiah Grimes, completed 9-of-24 passes for 78 yards. Luther Ware led the defense with 11 tackles, while Charles Hill added 10 stops.
