Lakers Crush Indianapolis 50-13

Allendale, Mich. - #1 Grand Valley State cruised to another GLIAC win 50-13 over Indianpolis on Saturday at Lubbers Stadium. The Lakers rolled up 508 total yards while holding the Greyhounds to 167 yards of offensive output. Senior QB Curt Anes completed 23 of 35 passes for 314 yards and three TD's. All of his scoring tosses went to All-American David Kircus who had a season high eight catches for 168 yards. GVSU also picked off three passes, and Marvis Bryant returned the last one 15 yards for the final score of the game with 7:42 remaining. The Lakers, the unanimous #1 in the AFCA Top 25, are now 9-0 on the season and 8-0 in the GLIAC and have won 25 consecutive regular season games.

Anes and Kircus hooked up for the first TD in the game with 6:20 remaining in the opening period from 40-yards out. Laker kicker David Hendrix kicked a 36-yard field goal five minutes later to up the lead to 10-0. After an Indianapolis TD, the Laker toss and catch combo tallied a 29-yard TD strike for a 16-7 lead. The Greyhounds responded with a 54-yard field goal, but Reggie Spearmon capped a 13 play, 80-yard drive with a one-yard TD plunge with 2:45 left in the half. GVSU was not done scoring in the half as Darren Smith got the ball back for the Lakers as he intercepted a Matt Kohn pass less than 30 seconds later. After 75 yards in six plays the Lakers added another score on a Brent Lesniak seven yard run to make the score 29-10 at halftime.

Indianapolis scored their only points in the half with 7:57 left in the third quarter when UI kicker Nick Parker made his second field goal of the game, with this one from 47 yards. GV needed only three plays and 1:08 to respond to that score as Spearmon took an Anes pass 36 yards for the score. Kircus caught his last TD with 12:03 left in the game to make it 43-13 and Bryant topped off the scoring with his interception return four minutes later.

Spearmon led the GVSU ground game with his fifth 100-yard game of the season as he rushed for 120 yards on 25 carries and he also caught six passes for 54 yards. Terrance Banks tallied six receptions for 43 yards.

Orlando Williams led the Laker defense with 6.5 tackles, two tackles for a loss including a sack and a forced fumble. Scott Makcey also had 6.5 tackles and the final Laker interception.

The Lakers will finish the regular season with a battle for first place in the GLIAC against Findlay next Saturday (Nov. 16) at 1:00 pm at Lubbers Stadium. Findlay is ranked #20 in the nation and is in second place in the conference with an 8-1 record.
