GVSU Earns 33-14 Victory Over Northwood

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State recorded its school record 23 straight regular season win on Saturday as they defeated Northwood 33-14 at Lubbers Stadium. The Lakers went into halftime with a 24-7 lead but Northwood scored the first TD of the second half to cut the lead to 24-14. GVSU did not allow another score while tacking on nine more points for the final margin. Reggie Spearmon rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns and Curt Anes threw for 248 yards and two scores. Grand Valley, the unanimous #1 in the AFCA Top 25, improves to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the GLIAC.

The Lakers opened the scoring with a 27-yard scoring strike from Anes to David Kircus to give GVSU a 7-0 lead with 10:35 left in the first quarter. Spearmon added the next score nine minutes later from a yard out to finish off an 11-play, 64-yard drive that ate up 5:01 off the clock. After a fumbled punt return, Northwood went 42 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 14-7 with 12:51 left in the half. GVSU answered back with another Anes to Kircus touchdown from three yards after a 78-yard drive to give the Lakers a 21-7 lead. Dave Hendrix finished the scoring with a 26-yard field goal as the first half expired with the Lakers leading 27-14.

Northwood started the second half scoring with a 7:10 drive that went 80 yards and finished by a nine yard TD rush by Yared Yearby to make the score 24-14. Dave Hendrix kicked his second field goal of the game from 22 yards out to boost the lead to 27-14. Spearmon finished the scoring with a two yard TD run for the final result.

The Lakers rolled up 423 yards of total offense including 175 yards rushing and 248 yards passing. David Kircus led the receiving corps with 106 yards on six catches and two TD's. With the six catches Kircus became GVSU's all-time leader in receptions with 178 passing Jason Trice and with the two TD's David moved into first on the GLIAC all-time scoring leader with 294 points. Terrance Banks had seven catches for 46 yards.

Scott Mackey led the defense with 14 tackles. Melvin Estes tallied eight tackles and a forced fumble and Todd DeVree picked off a pass for the other turnover.
