GVSU Earns Easy Win Over Mercyhurst 62-24

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State rolled past Mercyhurst 62-24 on Saturday in Erie, Penn. to extend the Lakers regular season winning streak to 24. Mercyhurst scored the first TD of the game after picking off an Anes pass on the first play of the game, but GVSU scored 28 unanswered points to take control of the game. Grand Valley was up 35-17 at the half and 56-17 after three quarters. Reggie Spearmon led the offense with 136 yards rushing on 17 carries and scored two TD's. Curt Anes was 18 of 24 for 226 yards with touchdowns to David Kircus and Terrance Banks. The Lakers, #1 in the AFCA Top 25, improve to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the GLIAC.

After MC went up 7-0, Spearmon scored two consecutive rushing touchdowns and Scott Makcey ran back a punt 87 yards to give the Lakers a 21-7 lead after the first quarter. Kircus and Banks scored their TD's in the second quarter from 32 and 20 yards respectively.

GVSU opened up the second half with three third quarter touchdowns. Brent Lesniak and Spearmon scored on the ground and Derek Washington caught a 15-yard TD from Todd Wojciechowski. Brandon Langston finished the game's scoring with a 33-yard TD run with 6:39 left in the game.

GVSU rolled up 595 yards of total offense on the day. Langston also went over 100 yards on the ground as he tallied 108 on 11 carries. Wojciechowski finished the day 7 of 8 for 66 yards and a TD.

Dustin Cole led the defense with 7.5 tackles. William Gray, Aaron Hein, and Todd DeVree each recorded a sack while Ryan Hukill intercepted a pass for the only forced turnover by the GV defense.

The Lakers will return to Lubbers Stadium for their final two games of the season, starting with a matchup versus Indianapolis next Saturday (Nov. 9) at 7:00 pm.
