WALTHAM, MASS. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team got their season started with a sweep of 22
nd-ranked Bentley in their first of four games this weekend. GVSU wins their season opener for the fifth consecutive year.
The Lakers took the match by the scores of 25-23, 25-22, and 25-14. The Lakers went up 4-0 to begin the opening frame, eventually getting up 10-6. The Falcons battled back to tie the match at 11 but could never get the lead. GVSU used a 5-0 and a 5-1 run to get back in control and take the first set. In the second set, both teams traded points until the Lakers used a 6-2 scoring run to take a 23-17 lead. Bentley answered with four straight points to get within two but kills from
Laene Voortman and
Brianna Stawski put the set away. The third set was controlled by the Lakers from start to finish, never trailing throughout, completing the sweep with an 11-point win.
Grace Busold totaled 10 kills from her outside hitter position, adding five digs. Brianna Staswki notched nine kills on a .538 hitting percentage, with
Paige Sanders recording five kills and three blocks.
Gabby Orlet dished out 22 assists and had 10 digs, while
Lexi Armstrong led the team with 19 digs. The Lakers held Bentley to a .030 hitting percentage, posting five blocks.
