#6 GVSU Splits Friday DH; Wins Game 2 14-6

#6 Grand Valley State split a GLIAC road doubleheader Friday afternoon at #19 Wayne State, dropping game one 3-1, but rebounded to claim a 14-6 win in game two. The Lakers, 26-5 overall and 6-1 in GLIAC action, will play the fourth and final game in the series Saturday with the Warriors (22-7, 6-5) at 12 noon. 
 
Game 2 – 
SS Evan Morrison singled to lead off game two, running his hitting streak to 31 games, and took second on a wild pitch. Morrison advanced to third on a Jovan Gill groundout and scored on a Caleb Estrada groundout in the top of the first. 

LF Caden Thelen was hit by a pitch to open the second and went to third on single to center off the bat of C Nick Krstich. 2B Ayden VanEnkevort hit a sacrifice fly to right that plated Thelen to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Wayne State tied the game in the bottom of the second, however, the GVSU offense got going in the fifth. Gill walked and 3B Caleb Estrada blasted his 10th home run of the year over the right field fence. Thelen reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Krstich double to give the Lakers a 5-2 lead. 

Estrada reached on an error with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and CF Jake Skaggs followed with a 2-run bomb to center. DH Josh Fleming walked and Thelen blasted a 2-run shot to center to up the Laker advantage to 9-2. VanEnkevort walked to open the seventh and later scored on a Gill single to center to up the lead to 10-2. Wayne State tallied three in the bottom of the seventh and one in the eighth. 

Morrison opened the ninth with a single and RF Ryan Stimac was hit by a pitch, the sixth Laker to get plunked. Gill singled to left to load the bases and Estrada hit his 11th home run of the year, this one in grand slam fashion to up the GVSU lead to 14-6. 

Junior Owen Avery improved to 5-0 on the year, yielding two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work. Zach Warren added two innings on the hill and Ty Uchman finished the game with two innings of scoreless baseball. 

Estrada was 3-for-6 with seven RBIs, smashing a grand slam and a 2-run shot. Skaggs was 1-for-4 with a 2-run shot and Thelen was 2-for-5 with a home run and three runs scored. Morrison collected two hits and scored two runs, while Gill and Krstich each produced two hits and an RBI. GVSU pounded out 12 hits, were issued 10 walks and hit by a pitch six time. 
 
 
Game 1 - 
Grand Valley State dropped the opening game Friday by a 3-1 score. The Lakers made a late push with a run in the top of the seventh, but were unable to get the equalizer across home plate. GVSU outhit the Warriors 8-7 and hit four doubles, but stranded seven runners on base, including four in scoring position. Wayne State took advantage of a 3-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.

Morrison was 2-for-4 with two doubles, while C Noah Brandt was 2-for-3 with a double. JJ Manion (3-1) took the loss on the bump, yielding three runs on five hits. Ethan Houghtaling logged the final 2.1 innings.
