ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State softball team split a GLIAC doubleheader at home against Roosevelt Saturday (Apr. 18) afternoon. The Lakers move to 20-20 on the season and 10-8 in the GLIAC after losing game one 1-0 before winning game two 11-3 in five innings.
Roosevelt claimed game one with a 1-0 win. They scored the lone run of the game in the top of the first inning.
Camryn Hall and
Eliana Eiland picked up hits for GVSU while
Karli Dorr tossed all seven innings allowing no earned runs with 10 strikeouts.
In game two, GVSU opened the scoring in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Hall and Eiland started the inning with back-to-back singles. Next batter,
Elizabeth Wesoloski laid down a sacrifice bunt, but a Roosevelt error allowed Hall to score for the opening run of the game. GVSU would explode for five runs off six hits in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead. Hall got the scoring started with an RBI single through the right side to score
Allyson Theunick. Next batter, Eiland singled to left field to bring home Lanney Cannon. Later in the inning, Hall stole home to make it 4-0 and
Kylee Hoebeke drove in Eiland with a single to left field.
Faith Edwards singled off a bunt to score Hoebeke to make it 6-0.
Roosevelt would get on the board in the third inning off an RBI single up the middle. GVSU quickly answered with a run in the bottom half of the third to make it 7-1. Eiland notched her third hit of the game with a double down the left field line to score Hall from first. Roosevelt would add two runs in the fourth inning to make it a 7-3 game. GVSU would score four runs in the fifth inning to claim the eight-run mercy. Hall singled to center field to score Theunick. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Hoebeke lined a bases clearing double to walk it off for GVSU.
Camryn Hall batted 3-3 with four runs scored and two RBI.
Eliana Eiland went 3-4 at the plate with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored.
Allyson Theunick hit 2-3 with two runs scored, while
Kylee Hoebeke batted 2-4 with a double, four RBI, and a run scored.
Lainey Cannon got the start in the circle and earned the win after tossing all five innings allowing one earned run off seven hits with four strikeouts.
GVSU will close the home weekend on Sunday, April 19
th when they host Parkside in a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 1:00 PM at the GVSU Softball Field.
