#6 Grand Valley State (31-7; 11-3) split a GLIAC doubleheader at Saginaw Valley State Friday afternoon, winning game one 6-1, but dropping game two 2-1. Game three is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday and game four will begin at 12 noon Sunday.
Game 1
Grand Valley State scored all the runs they would need (2) in the top of the second on four hits. 3B
Caleb Estrada doubled to right center and CF
Jake Skaggs followed with a single to center to plate Estrada, and went to second on the throw home. Freshman DH
Josh Fleming singled home Skaggs to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. SVSU pulled to within a run (2-1) on a solo home run, but GVSU upped the lead to 4-1 with two runs in the fifth. C
Noah Brandt and SS
Evan Morrison singled and then scored on a RF
Ryan Stimac's double down the right field line.
The Lakers added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Skaggs, Fleming and LF
Caden Thelen walked and Brandt plated Skaggs with a sacrifice fly. Stimac walked in the top of the seventh, stole second and scored on 1B
Jovan Gill's single to center.
Senior pitcher
Collin Bradley tossed a complete game to improve his record to 8-0 on the year. Bradley yielded one run on five hits with four strikeouts. Stimac was 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs, while Skaggs was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Brandt was also 2-for-3 with an RBI and Morrison was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Game 2
Saginaw Valley State scored two runs in the bottom of the first and those two runs held up for the win. The Lakers scored its only run in the top of the third when Morrison reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second when Stimac was hit by a pitch. Estrada singled home Morrison for the Lakers' only run.
Owen Avery took the loss on the mound, yielding two runs on six hits with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
Ethan Houghtaling went the final 2.1 innings, yielding just one hit.
Estrada was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
