Sprints/Hurdles Crew Shines at GVSU Al & Sue Owens Classic

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Grand Valley State track and field closed out their busy weekend this evening as they concluded competition at the GVSU Al & Sue Owens Classic. The two-day meet was highlighted by several national championship-qualifying marks/times, 12 all-time top-10 school records and one program record.

Saturday was largely dominated by GVSU's sprints and hurdles crew, led by the women's 4x100m relay squad. Catherine Guckenberger, Gianni Harris, Claire Neumann and Alaina Diaz combined for a finish at 44.73 to become the new program record holders in the event, a title that had stood since 2021. The finish ranks them second in NCAA Division II.
 
The men's 4x100m relay squad had a good outing, as well. Sam Mitas, Jason Hamilton II, Sam Coyle and Joshua Page had a finish at 40.32 to win the event, rank fifth in program history and 10th in NCAA DII.
 
Dominic Downes ran a double-personal-best, first crossing the finish line at 13.96 in the 110m hurdles prelims and then found another best with a 13.93 finish in the finals to rank fifth in NCAA DII and tie teammate Joshua Hurt for No. 3 in program history. Parker Campbell had a PR in the event of his own later in the day, tying his 14.17 finish in the finals round.
 
Although Joshua Page did not run a personal-best, he ran a season-best 100m to win the finals and rank No. 8 in division II. His 10.37 finish ranks him third in program history.
 
GVSU athletes showed out in the 200m. Gianni Harris was the first to PR, crossing the finish line at 24.00 to not only win the event, but rank No. 17 in division II and second in program history. In the men's event, Page, Hamilton II, Sam Mitas and Sam Coyle swept places one through four with Coyle tying his personal-best finish at 21.47.
 
The women's 4x400m squad closed out the sprints and hurdles show with a NCAA Division II No. 2 finish. Guckenberger, Neumann, Addison Washler and Diaz completed the relay in 3:40.65 to qualify for the outdoor championships.
 
There were several other notable GVSU performances throughout the day. Daisy Speet and Megan Postma posted personal-and-season-bests in the 800m; Speet ranks No. 11 in DII with a personal-best 2:08.73 time and Postma ranks 13th with a season-best finish at 2:09.78. In the men's heat, Sam Allen ran a season-best 1:49.50 to rank No. 12 in DII.
 
In shot put, Avery Lahti and Jerry Capaccio threw season-bests to find spots on the NCAA DII top-20 list. Lahti landed a 14.74m (48-4.5) outdoor personal-best to rank No. 10 in DII while Capaccio threw for 16.94m (55-7) to rank 19th.
 
Lauren Rokos ranks No. 19, as well, but in women's high jump. The sophomore cleared a 1.68m (5-6) bar to record a personal-best mark in the event.
 
Zoe Zeiser found herself as the new No. 20 in NCAA DII with a personal-best mark in long jump. On her final attempt, Zeiser jumped for 5.83m (19-1.5) to make her way into the NCAA rankings and move up to No. 7 in program history.
