CHICAGO, ILL. – The seventh-ranked Grand Valley State baseball team got their series at Roosevelt underway this afternoon. The Lakers began the four-game set in dominant fashion, winning 21-9 in the nine-inning affair. The win improves them to 27-6 overall and 7-2 in GLIAC play.
The Lakers jumped out early, scoring five runs in the first frame. They pushed the lead up to seven, scoring one run in both the third and fourth innings. Roosevelt got one back in the bottom of the fourth, then both teams scored twice in the fifth, as the Lakers led 9-3. GVSU struck for five runs in the sixth, increasing their lead up to 14-3.
RU brought two across in the bottom of the seventh, but Grand Valley State responded with seven runs the following half inning, reaching 20 or more runs for the fourth time this season. Roosevelt scored three runs in the final frame to bring them within 12.
Grand Valley State's offense posted 17 hits, six going for extra bases.
Jake Skaggs led the way with four hits, four RBI, and four runs scored.
Caden Thelen recorded three hits, driving in four runs, and scoring four times.
Josh Fleming was 3-4 at the plate, scoring twice and bringing home two runs.
Evan Morrison and
Noah Brandt each had two hits, with Brandt driving in three, and Morrison scoring three times.
On the mound,
Collin Bradley got the start, going five innings, striking out four batters, allowing two earned runs.
Michael Giroux threw two innings, allowing two unearned runs, fanning two.
Lukas Brewer and
Edward Konow each threw a scoreless frame.
The Lakers will play a doubleheader tomorrow, then they will close out the series on Sunday with a single game.
