BARTOW, Fla. – The Grand Valley State softball team split a pair of games on day two at The Spring Games in Florida Monday (Mar. 9) afternoon. The Lakers are 7-7 on the season after defeating Edinboro 8-0 in six innings and falling to Northwood 4-3 in extra innings.
Game One vs Northwood – L, 4-3 (8-Innings)
Northwood would score the first run of the game in the top of the second inning. GVSU got on the board in the third inning with two runs to take a 2-1 lead.
Grace Usher hit a sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game and
Faith Edwards brought home
Eliana Eiland to give the Lakers the lead. The Timberwolves tied the game in the fifth inning as both teams would be held scoreless in the final two innings to send the game into extra's. In extra innings, Northwood scored two runs in the top half of the inning to take a 4-2 lead. The Lakers would score one run in the bottom half on an RBI by
Jasmine Mauk but would come up short and fall by a score of 4-3.
Faith Edwards went 3-4 with an RBI while
Camryn Hall and
Kylee Hoebeke each notched two hits and scored one run.
Game Two vs Edinboro – W, 8-0 (6-Innings)
GVSU opened the scoring in the top half of the first inning on a single by
Grace Usher followed by an Edinboro error that allowed
Faith Edwards to score. The Lakers would double the lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by
Kylee Hoebeke to score Edwards from third. GVSU would score three runs in the fourth to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
Camryn Hall notched a two-run double to center field to score
Jasmine Mauk and
Brynn Taliercio. Next batter, Edwards doubled to right field to score Hall from second base.
The Lakers would score three runs in the top of the sixth inning to claim the eight-run mercy rule win.
Kenedy Coombe hit a single through the right side to score Edwards. Next batter,
Allyson Theunick tripled to right center to score both Usher and Coombe.
Faith Edwards batted 3-4 with a double, three runs scored, and one RBI.
Camryn Hall went 2-4 at the plate with a double, two runs batted in, and a run scored.
Allyson Theunick notched a triple with two hits and two runs batted in.
Kylie Swierkos got the start in the circle and earned the win (2-2) after tossing all six innings allowing no runs on two hits with four strikeouts.
The Lakers will be back in Florida for two more games. GVSU will face Glenville State at 10:00 AM and Wayne State College at 1:15 PM. Both games will be streamed live on FloCollege.
