#10 GVSU Claims 10-9 Win Over Middle Georgia State

#10 Grand Valley State claimed a crazy 10-9 win over Middle Georgia State Saturday (Mar. 21) at Embry-Riddle's Silwa Field. The Lakers, 19-4 overall, will play the host school, Embry-Riddle Sunday at 12 noon to finish the four-game weekend. 

Middle Georgia State tied the game with six runs in the top of the seventh, but 3B Caleb Estrada tallied his fourth hit of the game to start a three-run seventh inning. The Lakers took advantage of three walks, two hit batters and three wild pitches to regain the lead, 10-7. Middle Georgia scored two runs and had the bases load in the top of the ninth when Ty Uchman recorded a game-ending strikeout to earn his third save of the year. Zach Warren picked up the win on the mound, yielding two runs on three hits in 2.1 innings.

Senior SS Evan Morrison opened the bottom of the first with a single, stole second and moved to third on a 1B Jovan Gill fly out to center. Estrada provided a 2-out single to plat Morrison and give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. DH Kaden Howard singled with two outs and Gill followed with a walk. Estrada provided another 2-out single to score Howard and give GVSU a 2-0 lead. 

RF Ryan Stimac singled to shortstop to open the inning and stole second. 2B Ayden VanEnkevort singled home Stimac with a single to center and after a Morrison walk Howard doubled in two runs to up the lead to 5-0. Estrada recorded his third hit of the day, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on CF Jake Skaggs groundout. Stimac singled home Estrada with a single to left. 

Morrison tripled to right with one out and Howard drove in his third run of the day with a sac fly to center to plate Morrison in the sixth.

Junior pitcher Owen Avery was impressive on the mound, yielding just one unearned run on six hits with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched. Estrada was 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Howard was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Morrison was 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored. Stimac was 2-for-4 with two RBI and VanEnkevort was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
