The second round of GLIAC play began last weekend for GVSU, as they hosted #12 Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech. The Laker defense was the story in the 70-47 win over NMU, as they held the Wildcats to 23% shooting and only 13% from three. On the offensive side,
MacKenzie Bisballe recorded 19 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks, with
Nicole Kamin and
Ava Scanlon both notched 11 points. In Saturday's 74-62 victory over the Huskies, GVSU withstood a hot-shooting Michigan Tech team, thanks to a game-high 20 points from Kamin.
Paige VanStee and Bisballe each had double-doubles, with
Lexi Plitzuweit registering 10 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. The two victories moved GVSU to 20-0 overall and 12-0 in league play.
In the first meeting between GVSU and PNW, the Lakers took an early lead, and never looked back, winning 89-61. VanStee had a monster game, totaling 25 points and 11 rebounds. Plitzuweit and Scanlon each scored 12, with Plitzuweit adding eight boards. The Laker defense forced 28 turnovers and won the rebounding battle 49-31.
That loss for the Pride was their third straight at the time, but that streak has ballooned into nine consecutive losses. They are now 3-17 overall and last place in the GLIAC at 1-11. Their lone win the league came in the first game of 2026, taking down LSSU on the road. Leading the Pride is senior Alyssa Cole, who is averaging over 13 points and nearly seven rebounds. Ciara Sims and Cameryn Phillips also average double-figure points for PNW. The Pride have the league's worst defense, allowing over 80 points a game.
The Lakers and Warriors played a thriller back on January 8
th in Allendale. Trailing by one with less than 20 seconds to play, VanStee hit a driving layup to put GVSU in the lead. On the following possession, GVSU did not allow a shot attempt from the Warriors, hanging on for the 81-80 win. Plitzuweit hit four three-pointers, all in the second half, to collect 20 points, adding six rebounds. VanStee had 18 points and eight boards, while
Nicole Kamin tallied 17 points and five assists.
Wayne State begins February in a tie for third place in the conference at 9-3, one game back of second. The Warriors have lost two of their past three games, falling on the road to NMU and Ferris State. However, they have been unbeatable on their home court, going 6-0, winning those games by over 16 points each. Two of the top-10 scorers in the GLIAC reside in Detroit, with the league's second-leading scorer, McKenna Ferguson, scoring over 16 a contest. Taylor Thompson is sixth in the conference, contributing 15.3 a game. Thompson is also fourth in rebounding at 7.6 a game. Ferguson shoots 43.2% from three, part of a Warrior group that is ninth nationally in three-point percentage, making 36.6% of their shots from deep.
