Third-Ranked Women's Basketball Dominates LSSU, 87-40

SAULT STE. MARIE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State women's basketball team traveled back across the Mackinac Bridge to play Lake Superior State Saturday afternoon. The number three team in the country jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, winning 87-40. Completing the season sweep over LSSU moves GVSU to 25-1 overall and 17-1 in league play.

Aided by three Nicole Kamin three-pointers, GVSU started the game on a 20-0 run, finished off by seven straight points from Reese Gaytan. After LSSU got on the board, Gaytan hit an old-fashioned three-point play to make the score 23-2. A few minutes later, Paige VanStee connected from the corner for a three, helping the Lakers lead 33-10 after one.

A 7-0 GVSU run got the second half started, pushing the advantage up to 30 points. After that run, the two teams went back-and-forth the rest of the way, with GVSU up 50-21 at the half.

The second half started with a triple from Avery Zeinstra, pushing the lead above 30 points, where it would never drop below the remainder of the contest. The advantage continued to grow throughout the period, getting to as much as 39 following a Lauren Slagle three, but finished the quarter at 38, 67-29.

Grand Valley State quickly got their lead above 40 early in the fourth, starting with an 8-2 run. The Lakers continued to get scoring from their bench, with Kray adding four more points, and both Sydney Cherney and Jordyn Bonnema recording two points. The win marked the fifth consecutive season that GVSU has won at least 25 games.

Nicole Kamin drained three triples as part of her team-high 12 points, with Reese Gaytan scoring a career-high 11 points. MacKenzie Bisballe and Kelly Kray each had 10 points, with Kray setting a new career high. GVSU forced 28 turnovers and won the rebounding battle 38-23.
