#8 GVSU Sweeps Saturday DH At Cedarville, 4-2 And 13-4

#8 Grand Valley State (6-1) swept a non-conference doubleheader at Cedarville Saturday afternoon, taking game one 4-2 and game two 13-4. The Lakers, who won the three-game series 3-0, will return to Marion, Illinois next weekend for a four-game series with Hillsdale College at Mountain Dew Park. Friday's single, 9-inning game will begin at 2 p.m.
 
Game 1 
Grand Valley State scored two runs in the top of the ninth to break a 2-2 tie en route to the win. RF Will Bowen and DH Kaden Howard walked with one out and 2B Ayden VanEnkevort singled home Noah Alvord who was running for Bowen. SS Evan Morrison then singled home Howard to give GVSU a 4-2 lead. 

The Lakers pushed a run across in the top of the fifth when 3B Caleb Estrada opened the inning with a walk. Howard picked up his first collegiate hit with a single to right and Estrada advanced to third. Howard stole second and freshman C Noah Brandt grounded out and shortstop to record the first RBI of his career when Estrada scored. Brandt collected the first hit of his career in the third with a single. 

Brandt doubled to left to lead off the top of the eighth and VanEnkevort was hit by a pitch. Morrison bunted for a hit to load the bases and 1B Jovan Gill plated Brandt with a sacrifice fly. 
Starting pitcher Owen Avery started on the hill, yielding no runs on four hits with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. 

Senior Mike Morawski, pitching for the first time in more than a year, recorded two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. 
JJ Manion picked up the win, striking out two and allowing two hits and two unearned runs in 1.1 innings, while Ty Uchman got the final two outs and the save. 
 
 
Game 2
Morrison opened the game with a bunt for a single and Howard reached on an error. Gill lined into a double play, followed by a single by Estrada and an RBI single from Skaggs. Cedarville scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead, but the Lakers came back with two runs on three hits in the top of the second. C Nick Krstich singled and Morrison doubled with two outs. Howard was hit by a pitch and Gill drove in a pair with a ground rule double to right. 
 
VanEnkevort walked with two outs, stole second and scored on a single to right by Krstich in the third and Morrison homered to right to give the Lakers a 5-2 lead in the top of the fourth. Estrada hit a 2-run HR to right that scored Gill who doubled in the inning to give GVSU a 7-3 lead in the sixth.

GVSU added three in the top of the seventh on three hits. Howard singled in two runs and Gill added another RBI on the day with a single right that scored Morrison who was intentionally walked. 
 
Skaggs walked to open the eighth, moved to second on a single by Thelen and VanEnkevort plated Skaggs with a single to center. Thelen scored on a Krstich sacrifice fly and VanEnkevort scored on a Nolan Alvord groundout.
 
Jackson Kees picked up the win (2-0), yielding two runs on two hits with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Zach Warren, Lukas Brewer, Brayden Muir, Luke Stevens and Michael Giroux closed out the final four innings.
 
Morrison was 5-for-10 on the day with three runs scored, two RBI, a double and a home run, while Gill was 3-for-7 with four RBI. VanEnkevort and Howard each collected three hits, while Estrada tallied two hits, two RBI and a HR.
