Big Second Half Fuels #19 Lakers Over Parkside Saturday

ALLENDALE – The No. 19 Grand Valley State men's basketball team defeated Parkside 73-57 behind a big second half to secure win number 20 on the season. The Lakers are now 20-4 on the season and still tied for first place in the GLIAC standings with a 13-3 mark.
 
Five Lakers scored in double figures led by Mason Docks and Ethan Alderink who each scored 14 points. Docks knocked down four three-pointers, grabbed five rebounds, and swiped two steals, while Alderink pulled down a team high seven rebounds and shot a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line. Trevor Smith Jr. scored 13 points on 6-10 shooting with four assists and four steals. Jalen Charity notched 11 points and six rebounds, while David Wilkerson added 10 points and four steals in the win. 
 
GVSU shot 38% from the field and 50% in the second half. Parkside 34% from the field and 33% from three-point range. Parkside outrebounded the Lakers 37-35 but GVSU grabbed 16 offensive rebounds with 19 second chance points. The Lakers swiped 11 steals and forced the Rangers to commit 21 turnovers. GVSU outscored Parkside 36-18 on the paint. 
 
Parkside jumped out to an early 10-point lead at 17-7 nine minutes into the game. Docks would knock down a three to pull within one at 21-20 and Shamus Thompson gave GVSU a one-point lead with a steal and made layup in transition. The Lakers would hold on to a slim three-point lead as the Rangers would knock down a pair of free throws just before the end of the half to send GVSU into the break with a 32-31 lead. 
 
GVSU began the second half on a 10-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at 42-33 with 14:38 remaining in the game. Parkside responded with an 11-3 run over the next two minutes to pull within one at 45-44. GVSU answered with a 22-8 run to take a commanding 15-point lead with Docks scoring 11 points during that stretch. Smith Jr. would increase the lead to 17. With a steal and layup in transition with just over five minutes to go as GVSU would outscore Parkside 28-13 I the final 10 minutes.
 
GVSU will be on the road next week for a pair of GLIAC games against Saginaw Valley State on Thursday, February 19that 7:30 PM and Lake Superior State on Saturday, February 21st at 3:00 PM. Both games will be streamed live on FloCollege and can be listened live on Thunder Country 107.3.
