ALLENDALE – The No. 19 Grand Valley State men's basketball team dominated Roosevelt 81-52 Thursday (Feb. 12) night at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers improve to 19-3 on the season and 12-3 in the GLIAC.
Jalen Charity scored his 1,000
th career point in a Laker uniform. Charity finished with 13 points and three rebounds and became the 36
th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone.
David Wilkerson led GVSU in scoring with 15 points on 6-11 shooting from the field with three triples.
Mason Docks scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds on 5-10 shooting from the floor with two three-pointers.
Ethan Alderink posted his second double-double of the season with 10 point and 11 rebounds.
Shamus Thompson brought down 10 rebounds and blocked three shots.
GVSU shot 41% from the field and 53% in the second half, while Roosevelt shot 32% from the field and 27% in the second half. GVSU dominated the glass, outrebounding Roosevelt 52-29 with 19 offensive rebounds and 23 second chance points. GVSU scored 38 points in the paint to Roosevelt's 22 and had 27 points from the bench to Roosevelt's two points.
The first half saw five lead changes and two ties as GVSU took a 33-30 lead into the break. GVSU knocked down five three-pointers in the first 20 minutes of play and shot a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. Roosevelt also knocked five shots from behind the arc. Wilkerson knocked down all three of his three-pointers in the opening half to help GVSU to a three-point lead.
GVSU dominated the second half outscoring Roosevelt 48-22. The Lakers started the second half on a 12-5 run from six points by Docks and four points by Alderink to put GVSU in front 45-35 with just over 16 minutes to play. GVSU would go on a 15-0 run after a put back layup by
Charles Turner to give GVSU a 15-point 17-point lead with under 14 minutes remaining. Charity would score his 1,000
th career point on a driving layup with 11 minutes to go to put GVSU up 20 points at 59-39. The Lakers would close the final 10 minutes of the game outscoring Roosevelt 22-10 shooting 50% from the field.
GVSU will close this week's homestand on Saturday, February 14
