ALLENDALE – The No. 23 Grand Valley State claimed their eighth straight win after defeating No. 6 Michigan Tech 55-46 Saturday (Jan. 31) afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The win marks the Lakers second straight win over a Top 10 team and third win over a Top 10 team this season.
Mason Docks led GVSU in scoring with 13 points on 3-8 shooting from the field with three steals and two rebounds.
Trevor Smith Jr. scored 11 points off the bench with a team leading three assists.
Ethan Alderink scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds, while
Jalen Charity added eight points and seven rebounds. GVSU shot 33% from the field and held Michigan Tech to 29% shooting from the field and 25% from three-point range. The Huskies outrebounded the Lakers 39-37 and 12-9 in offensive rebounds.
GVSU jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first three minutes a 14-3 lead. Michigan Tech would knock down two straight three's to make it 14-9 with eight minutes to play in the first half.
Trevor Smith Jr. would stop the Michigan Tech run with a step back three from the corner followed by five straight points by
Ethan Alderink to make it 22-9 GVSU. The two teams would trade baskets as
Mason Docks would give the Lakers a 13-point lead again with a deep three from the top of the key with just over two minutes to go in the first half. Jalen Chairty would get a steal and dunk just before the end of the half to give GVSU a 29-17 lead into the break.
In the second half, GVSU would take their largest lead of the game at 34-20 on a
David Wilkerson step back three from the right wing. Michigan Tech would go on an 18-4 run over a nine-minute stretch to tie the game at 38-38 with 7:48 remaining in the game. Charity would give the Lakers the lead again with a three from the corner. Two minutes later,
Mason Docks hit a three from the wing to put GVSU in front 47-40 with 4:48 to play. The Lakers would knock down free throw the rest of the way to secure the win.
GVSU will be on the road next week for a pair of GLIAC games. The Lakers will travel to face Purdue Northwest on Thursday, February 5
th at 8:00 PM ET and Wayne State on Saturday, February 7
th at 3:00 PM. Both games will be streamed live on FloCollege and can be listened live on thunder Country 107.3.
