CHICAGO – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team pulled away in the second half to defeat Roosevelt 87-69 for their sixth straight win. The Lakers improve to 15-3 on the season and 8-2 in the GLIAC.
GVSU was led by
Jalen Charity who scored 20 points and grabbed three rebounds on 7-11 shooting from the field with two three-pointers.
Ethan Alderink scored 16 points and tied for the team lead with seven rebounds on 5-8 shooting and dished out three assists.
Shamus Thompson notched 12 points and seven rebounds shooting 8-12 from the free throw line.
David Wilkerson scored 12 points, grabbed four rebounds, dished out three assists, swiped three steals, and blocked two shots on 6-11 shooting.
Trevor Smith Jr. added 10 points and four assists, while
Mason Docks led GVSU with five assists.
GVSU shot 45% from the field and 75% from the free throw line. Roosevelt 38% from the field and 82% from the charity stripe. The Lakers outrebounded Roosevelt 41-29 and 16-7 in offensive rebounds. GVSU dished out 17 assists and committed just six turnovers, while forcing Roosevelt to commit 14 turnovers.
GVSU jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead off four points from
Shamus Thompson and a three by
Ethan Alderink. Roosevelt would answer with a 6-0 run to pull within one, but GVSU responded with a quick 4-0 run off buckets by
Jalen Charity and
Trevor Smith Jr. The Lakers would go on a 9-0 run to take their largest lead of the half with nine minutes remaining in the first half on a driving layup by
David Wilkerson. The two teams would close out the final minutes 18-18 to give GVSU a 40-31 advantage heading into halftime.
In the second half, pulled within four points at 47-43 with 15 minutes to play, but GVSU with a 10-1 run on back-to-back three-pointers by
Javion Otten and
Charles Turner to put GVSU up 57-43. Roosevelt would cut the GVSU lead to six with 9:30 remaining, but an 18-4 RUN by GVSU would secure the win as they pulled away with their largest lead at 78-58 with four minutes left and would hold on for the 18-point win.
GVSU will return home after a three-game road trip next weekend. The Lakers will host Northern Michigan on Thursday, January 29
th at 7:30 PM and Michigan Tech on Saturday, January 31
