ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team claimed a dominate 76-54 victory against Purdue Northwest Saturday (Jan. 10) at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers improve to 11-3 on the season and 4-2 in the GLIAC.
Ethan Alderink led all scorers with 24 points on 9-12 shooting from the field and seven rebounds. Alderink knocked down three three-pointers in 26 minutes of action.
Shamus Thompson recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and a career high 15 rebounds. Thompson also blocked three shots and swiped one steal.
Mason Docks scored 11 points on 4-8 shooting with four assists and three steals.
Trevor Smith Jr. added 11 points and dished out four assists on 5-9 shooting from the field.
GVSU dominated Purdue Northwest on the glass, outrebounding the Pride 49-35 with 21 offensive rebounds. The Lakers shot 40% from the field, while Purdue Northwest shot 38.9% from the floor. GVSU turned the ball over just four times with zero in the second half and forced Purdue Northwest to commit 13 turnovers. The Lakers also dominated the paint, outscoring the Pride 38-20.
GVSU got off to a slow start as Purdue Northwest jumped out to a 19-10 lead. The Pride would knock down a three with five minutes remaining in the first half to go up 21-12. The Lakers would end the half on a 19-4 run in the final five minutes.
Mason Docks and
Charles Turner each scored seven points during that span with two three-pointers.
Shamus Thompson ended the half with a dunk in the final seconds to put the Lakers up 31-25 at halftime.
In the second half, GVSU would go on a 19-9 run in the first seven minutes to take their largest lead of the game at 50-34.
Ethan Alderink scored eight points and
Antaune Allen made five straight points to give GVSU a 16-point lead. Purdue Northwest would cut the deficit to 10 at 59-49 with 6:53 to play. GVSU would end the game on a 17-7 run with 12 points coming from Alderink to pull away with a 22-point win.
The Lakers will be back home on Thursday, January 15
th when they host Davenport in the crosstown showdown. Tipoff is set for 7:30 PM at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The game will be streamed live on FloCollege and can be listened live on Thunder Country 107.3.
