GVSU Takes Down SVSU On Senior Day

ALLENDALE, MICH. -  The Grand Valley State women's volleyball team concluded their homestand Saturday afternoon with a matchup against Saginaw Valley State on Senior Day. The Lakers took care of business at home, completing the perfect weekend, sweeping the Cardinals. GVSU is now 7-2 overall and 2-0 in league play.
 
Before the game, the team held Senior Day, honoring four outstanding players. McKenzie Johnson, Vienna Koenigsknecht, Meghan O'Sullivan, and Kendall Stover were all celebrated for their careers. Over their four seasons in Allendale, this class has won 81 games, a GLIAC regular season title, and made two trips to the NCAA Tournament.
 
In the game, the Lakers won in straight sets, taking it 25-19, 25-18, and 25-19. It was the fourth straight sweep for GVSU. In the opening set, the Lakers took an early 4-1 lead, but the Cardinals kept hanging around, going on a mid-set 3-0 run to make it 17-14 GVSU. Grand Valley would respond, scoring six of the next eight points, pushing their lead to 23-16 and closed it out from there, going up 1-0 in the match. The two teams traded points for most of set number two, until with SVSU leading 17-16, the Lakers went on a 9-1 run to close out the game, taking the second set by seven points. GVSU took a quick lead in the third set, going up 9-5, and eventually extending it out to 18-10. The Cardinals would not go away, chipping back to within three at 21-18, but the Lakers would not let them get any closer, ending on a 4-1 scoring run to complete the sweep.
 
Meghan O'Sullivan stuffed the stat sheet with a team-high nine kills, 14 assists, and seven digs, while also serving two aces. Kendall Stover had eight kills and five digs, with Sara Pahl and Kennedy Arp also adding eight kills. Caroline Baker dished out 18 assists and McKenzie Johnson dug 10 balls. GVSU served seven aces in the match and limited SVSU to a .021 hitting percentage.
