#14 GVSU Claim 8-7 Win Over SVSU In Friday Afternoon Contest

#14 Grand Valley State claimed an 8-7 walkoff victory over Saginaw Valley State Friday afternoon at the GVSU Baseball Field in the first game of a four-game GLIAC series. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
 
Sophomore 3B Caleb Estrada singled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored when junior SS Evan Morrison came through with a two-strike single to center to give the Lakers the win. 
 
Grand Valley State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when DH Jonas Gulbrandsen singled to open the inning, went to second on a ground out and third on single to right from 2B Ayden VanEnkevort. RF Ryan Stimac plated Gulbrandsen on a fielder's choice for the first run of the game. The Lakers pushed five runs across in the plate in the bottom of the fifth on six hits. Senior LF Ryan Dykstra opened the inning with a double and 1B Jovan Gill followed with a two-run homer to right to give GVSU a 3-0 lead. Gulbrandsen and C Brendan Guciardo each singled and moved up a base on a wild pitch. VanEnkevort plated Gulbrandsen with a groundout and Guciardo scored on a wild pitch. Freshman CF Caden Thelen singled and scored on an Estrada double to left center. 

Saginaw Valley State scored two runs in the top of the fifth and four in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 6-6. GVSU took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the seventh on a Thelen single, who then moved to second on an Estrada groundout and third on a wild pitch. Morrison singled home Thelen for the Laker lead. 

SVSU scored a single run in the top of the eighth before the Lakers walked it off in the bottom of the ninth.

Senior RHP Colby Phipps (2-1) picked up the win in relief, yielding two runs on four hits in 3.0 innings of work with one strikeout. Jayden Dentler started the game on the mound, yielding two runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
 
Morrison was 2-5 with two RBI, while Gill was 1-4 with two RBI and a 2-run home run. Thelen was 2-4 with two runs scored and Estrada was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Gulbrandsen was 2-4 with two runs scored.
