GVSU Claims 9-4 GLIAC Win Over Wayne State

The Lakers hit 3 home runs in the bottom half of the fourth

#9 Grand Valley State claimed a 9-4 GLIAC victory over Wayne State Thursday afternoon at the GVSU Baseball Field. The Lakers improve to 29-9 overall and 12-5 in GLIAC action. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 12 noon.

Wayne State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with a solo home run, but the Lakers answered back in the bottom half of the frame when RF Ryan Stimac's RBI single scored 2B Ayden VanEnkevort. WSU hit another solo home run in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1, but the Lakers broke the game open with six runs on three home runs in the bottom of the fourth. On three consecutive pitches Grand Valley State went double by C Brendan Guciardo, single by 2B Ayden VanEnkevort and three-run home run by CF Caden VanEnkevort. Following two ground outs, SS Evan Morrison singled and stole second, followed by a Ryan Dykstra two-run home run to left center. 1B Jovan Gill then hit a solo home run to right to complete the six-run inning. Dykstra walked with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and Gill hit his second home run of the day, this one in two-run fashion. 

Senior Jayden Dentler improved to 8-0 on the year, yielding two runs on five hits with a season-high nine strikeouts in six innings. Senior Colby Phipps pickup the save with three strikeouts in two innings of work.

Gill was 2-3 with three RBI, two runs scored and two home runs, while Thelen was 2-3 with three RBI, one run scored and a 3-run home run. Dykstra waw 1-3 with two RBI and a two-run home run, while Stimac was 1-4 with and RBI. VanEnkevort was 2-4 with two runs.
