ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State softball team closed out their weekend homestand with a doubleheader sweep over Davenport Sunday (April 13) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 19-21 on the season and 10-8 in the GLIAC after taking game one 12-4 in five innings and game two 11-4.
Game One – W, 12-4 (5-Inninngs)
Davenport started the game scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. The Panthers led off the game with a single up the middle followed by a two-run home run to left field later in the inning.
GVSU would take the lead with a three-run third inning.
Faith Edwards got the Lakers on the board with a double down the left field line to score
Kenedy Coombe. Two batters later,
Elizabeth Wesoloski launched a two-run home run to left center for her third of the season and second of the weekend.
The Lakers would explode for eight runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 11-1 lead.
Morgan Spicer got the scoring started by scoring on a wild pitch.
Madelynn Pope tripled to left center to bring home both
Karli Dorr and
Kylie Sinal. Two batters later,
Eliana Eiland singled to center field to bring home Pope. Next batter, Wesoloski launched her second home run of the game to left field to put GVSU ahead 9-2. Spicer and
Carsyn Segorski would notch RBI singles to cap off the eight run inning.
Davenport would avoid the eight-run mercy rule by scoring a run in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single to center field. In the bottom of the fifth, the Lakers would claim the mercy rule win with an RBI infield single by
Grace Usher that brought home
Faith Edwards.
Elizabeth Wesoloski batted 2-4 with two home runs, four runs batted in, and two runs scored.
Faith Edwards hit 2-3 with a double, two runs scored, and one RBI.
Morgan Spicer went 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI.
Eliana Eiland hit 2-2 with an RBI and run scored.
Madelynn Pope drove in two runs and hit a triple.
Karli Dorr got the start in the circle and earned the win after tossing four innings allowing two runs off two hits with five strikeouts.
Game Two – W, 11-4
GVSU got off to a fast start scoring six runs in the first inning.

Madelynn Pope drew a walk with the bases loaded to make it 3-0. Next batter,
Kylie Sinal cleared the bases with a 3-run double to left center to double the Laker lead to 6-0.
Davenport would get on the scoreboard in the third inning with an RBI double to left field. GVSU responded with a five run fourth inning to take a commanding 11-1 lead.

The Lakers will travel to Purdue Northwest on Tuesday, April 15
th for a GLIAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM ET in Hammond, Indiana. Both games will be streamed live on FloSports.
