HAMMOND, Ind. – The Grand Valley State softball swept Purdue Northwest on the road to improve their winning streak to five Tuesday (April 15) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 21-21 on the season and 12-8 in the GLIAC after winning game one 7-6 and game two 10-3.
Game One – W, 7-6
GVSU struck first in the top of the first inning off the bat of
Elizabeth Wesoloski.
Faith Edwards led the game off getting hit by a pitch and Wesoloski launched a two-run home run to center field for her team leading fifth of the season and fourth in five games. Purdue Northwest scored a run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Laker lead in half.
The Lakers would score two runs in the third inning to increase the lead to 4-1.
Grace Usher launched a double to left center to score Wesoloski. Later in the inning, pinch runner
Kenedy Coombe scored off a Purdue Northwest error. Purdue Northwest would answer with a five-run bottom of the third inning to take a 6-4 lead.
GVSU would bring home one run in the fifth inning to cut the deficit in half. Wesoloski and Usher hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Two batters later,
Karli Dorr hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Wesoloski from third. The Lakers would retake the lead in the sixth inning. With two outs in the inning, Wesoloski launched another two-run home run over the left field wall for her second of the game to give GVSU a 7-6 lead.
Elizabeth Wesoloski led GVSU going 4-4 at the plate with two home runs, four runs batted in, and four runs scored.
Grace Usher hit 3-4 with two doubles and one RBI.
Madelynn Pope added a double, while
Faith Edwards walked twice, was hit by a pitch twice, and scored two runs. Nevaeh ingram got the start in the circle and earned the win after tossing allseven innings striking out five batters.
Game Two – W, 10-3
Purdue Northwest opened the scoring in game two with one run in the first inning off an RBI single with the bases loaded. GVSU quickly answered scoring seven runs in the second inning.
Liv Regenfuss tied the game at one with an infield RBI single to score pinch runner
Kenedy Coombe. Two batters later,
Carsyn Segorski gave the lakers the lead with an RBI single to center field. Next batter,
Faith Edwards walked with the bases loaded to make it 3-1.
Eliana Eiland added another run hitting a sacrifice fly to right field. Next batter,
Elizabeth Wesoloski launched a three-run home run to left field for her third of the afternoon to make it 7-1 Lakers.
GVSU would add one run in the fourth inning to take a seven-run lead off a Purdue Northwest error. The Pride would score two runs in the fifth inning to cut the Laker lead to five. GVSU would add two runs in the seventh inning off an RBI double by
Liv Regenfuss and RBI single by
Kylie Sinal.
Liv Regenfuss and
Jasmine Mauk each batted 3-4 at the plate. Regenfuss drove in two runs with a double and two runs scored, while Mauk scored one run.
Morgan Spicer hit 2-3 with a double and two runs scored.
Elizabeth Wesoloski launched her sixth home run over the last six games with three runs batted in.
Faith Edwards added a hit, and two runs scored.
Kylie Swierkos got the start in the circle and earned the win after tossing all seven innings striking out four batters.
GVSU will return home this week for a pair of GLIAC doubleheaders. The Lakers will host Roosevelt on Thursday, April 17
th at 3:00 PM and Parkside on Saturday, April 19
th at 1:00 PM. Both doubleheaders will be streamed live on FloSports.
