Lakers Sweep Davenport in Crosstown Showdown Saturday

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Grand Valley State softball team swept Davenport Saturday (March 29) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 15-15 on the season and 6-2 in the GLIAC after winning game one 5-4 and game two 5-3.
 
Game One – W, 5-4
 
GVSU scored all five of their runs in the fifth inning. Allyson Theunick led off the third inning with a solo home run to left field. That was Theunick's first collegiate home run. Two batters later, Eliana Eiland homered to left field for her first of the season to make it 3-0. Later in the inning, Morgan Spicer doubled to right field to score the pinch runner Kenedy Coombe. Next batter, Madelynn Pope doubled off the right field wall to score Grace Usher
 
Davenport would score four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it a 5-4 game. GVSU would hang on for the one run win after retiring the Panthers in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.
 
Eliana Eiland batted 2-3 with a home run, two runs batted in, and a run scored. Morgan Spicer hit 2-4 with a double and RBI. Madelynn Pope, Karli Dorr, and Allyson Theunick each drove in one run in the win. Dorr got the start in the circle and earned the win (6-6) after tossing all seven innings allowing three earned runs with nine strikeouts.
 
Game Two – W, 5-3
 
GVSU got off to a fast start in the first inning scoring three runs to take an early 3-0 lead. Karli Dorr got the scoring started with an RBI single to center field to score Faith Edwards. Next batter, Eliana Eiland and Dorr scored to make it 3-0 off a Davenport error. 
 
Davenport would tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning. The Panthers got on the board with an RBI double to left center and tied the game with a two-RB double to left field. The Lakers would quicky answer and retake the lead in the sixth inning. Allyson Theunick singled through the left side to score Madelynn Pope. Later in the inning, Edwards made it 5-3 GVSU with an RBI single up the middle to score Theunick.
 
Faith Edwards went 2-3 with a run scored and RBI. Madelynn Pope batted 2-3 with a doube and run scored. Karli Dorr and Elizabeth Wesoloski each batted 2-4, while Dorr scored and drove in one run. Nevaeh Ingram got the start in the circle and earned the win after wossing five innings allowing three runs off six hits with three strikeouts. Kylie Swierkos earned her first career save tossing two scoreless innings of relief.
 
The Lakers will travel to face rival Ferris State on Tuesday, April 1st in a GLIAC doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 2:30 PM in Big Rapids, Michigan.
