GVSU Drops Game To UIndy

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's lacrosse team closed out their home-opening weekend with another ranked matchup, taking on number nine UIndy. Behind a big first half, the Greyhounds pulled out an 11-8 victory.
 
The Greyhounds scored the first two goals of the game, leading 2-0 after the opening 15 minutes. Kendra Swope got the Lakers on the board early in the second quarter off an assist from Ashleigh Rothe. UIndy tacked on two more goals before Zoe Ziegler scored to make it 4-2. Indianapolis would respond with the final two goals of the half to lead 6-2.
 
Swope struck again to begin the second half, cutting the deficit in half. It would not last, as the Greyhounds scored twice to push their lead up to five. The Lakers cut it back to three with goals from Ziegler and Rothe. However, UIndy struck with a goal late in the quarter, leading 9-5 after three quarters.
 
UIndy scored twice to open the final period, pushing their lead up to 11-5. Grand Valley State scored the final three goals, getting scores from Ziegler, Ella Boose, and Rothe, but their comeback attempt came up short. The loss drops GVSU to 5-3 to begin the season.
 
Zoe Ziegler posted a hat trick to lead the offense, while Kendra Swope and Ashleigh Rothe both scored twice. Ella Boose had one goal and one assist. Rothe also added an assist. Boose had a team-high five draw controls, with Rothe and Ainsley Shilling both tallying three.
 
Sarah Krause recorded six second half saves to surpass 100 in her collegiate career. Swope and Karleigh Rohte both caused two turnovers. Ashleigh Rothe had three groundballs, with Swope, Krause, Lauren Volk, and Quinn McElroy all grabbing two.
 
Up Next
The Lakers open GLIAC play next weekend traveling north. They play Concordia-St. Paul on Friday, then take on Northern Michigan Sunday afternoon.
