ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Grand Valley State softball team opened up their conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep at Roosevelt Friday (March 21) afternoon. The Lakers won game one 11-3 in six innings and 13-6 in game two. Head coach
Dana Callihan picked up career win number 400 after the game two victory.
Game One: W, 11-3 (6-Innings)
GVSU opened the scoring with a three-run second inning.
Carsyn Segorski hit an RBI single to right field to score
Karli Dorr for the game's first run. Next batter,
Eliana Eiland singled through the right side to score
Madelynn Pope.
Faith Edwards would score Segorski from third to put GVSU up 3-0.
Roosevelt would get on the scoreboard in the third inning to make it 3-2 GVSU. Roosevelt would hit back-to-back RBI doubles to bring the Laker lead down to one. GVSU quickly responded with three runs in the fourth inning to go up 6-2. The Lakers scored their first run n the inning off a Roosevelt error. Faith Wesoloski singled through the left side to bring home Eiland. Later in the inning,
Grace Usher notched an RBI to score Edwards. Roosevelt would score one run in the bottom half of the fourth inning to make it 6-3.
GVSU would score one run in the fifth inning off a sacrifice fly and would score four runs in the sixth inning.
Grace Usher launched a solo home run for her first of the season. Later in the inning,
Nevaeh Ingram hit a two-RBI single followed by an RBI sacrifice fly by Eiland. GVSU would shut down Roosevelt in the bottom of the sixth to claim the eight-run mercy rule win.
Madelynn Pope went 3-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Carsyn Segorski batted 3-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Grace Usher hit 2-4 with a home run, two runs batted in, and a run scored.
Eliana Eiland went 2-3 at the palte with two runs batted in and a run scored.
Nevaeh Ingram got the start in the circle and tossed all six innings allowing three runs with seven strikeouts.
Game Two: W, 13-6
GVSU got off to a fast start scoring two runs in the first inning.
Grace Usher doubled to left center field to score both
Faith Edwards and
Elizabeth Wesoloski. Roosevelt quickly answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.
GVSU would respond with three runs in the second inning to go ahead 5-3.
Faith Edwards singled to right field to score
Liv Regenfuss and
Eliana Eiland. Later in the inning, Usher reached on an RBI fielder's choice that scored Edwards. Roosevelt tied the game at five in the bottom of the second off a two-RBI double to left field.
Carsyn Segorski gave the Lakers the lead again in the third inning with an RBI to score
Madelynn Pope. GVSU would score four runs in the fourth to take a five-run lead at 10-5. Pope tripled to center field to score
Karli Dorr and Usher. Next batter,
Morgan Spicer singled to score Pope from third. Later in the inning, Segorski doubled to left center to score Spicer. Roosevelt would add a run in the fourth to make it 10-6.
GVSU would add one run in the sixth on a Segorski RBI double to left field and two runs in the seventh to take a 13-6 lead. Edwards scored on a wild pitch and Wesoloski scored off an RBI by Pope.
Elizabeth Wesoloski led GVSU batting 4-5 with two runs scored.
Grace Usher hit 3-5 with three runs batted in and a run scored.
Madelynn Pope went 3-5 at the plate with two triples, three runs batted in, and two runs scored.
Carsyn Segorski went 2-4 with three runs batted in.
Faith Edwards hit 2-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while
Morgan Spicer added two hits with a triple and two runs scored.
Karli Dorr earned the win after tossing five innings of relief allowing one run with seven strikeouts.
GVSU will conclude their opening weekend of GLIAC play tomorrow (March 22) when they travel to face Parkside in a doubleheader in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
