GVSU To Take On Ashland For The Midwest Region Crown

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The two best teams in the Midwest Region will clash Monday night in the regional championship game. Top seed Grand Valley State will host the two seed of Ashland at 7:00 in the Fieldhouse with a trip to the Elite Eight on the line.

The Lakers earned their spot Monday night with two convincing wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals. They beat Quincy 108-72 on Friday night, then beat Wayne State 87-54 Saturday. Midwest Region Player of the Year Rylie Bisballe has led the Laker offense with 18 points and 5.5 rebounds a game in the tournament. MacKenzie Bisballe is averaging 14 points, with Paige Vanstee adding 13 a contest. The Lakers have dominated in the paint in the two games this weekend, scoring 62 paint points on Friday, then adding 48 more on Saturday. GVSU is shooting 55.9% from the field in the tournament and have forced over 20 turnovers a game.
 
These two teams met up earlier this season in mid-November, with the Lakers winning 67-42. GVSU led 29-22 at the half, then used a 19-7 third quarter quarter to take control and win the game. Rylie Bisballe and Nicole Kamin both scored 14 points to lead all scorers, with Bisballe adding five rebounds, three blocks, and two steals. Kamin also contributed four boards and four steals. Ellie Droste scored 12 points, totaling three steals and three assists. The Lakers forced 23 Eagle turnovers, their second highest total of the season, their 42 points was their lowest scoring output this year.
 
Ashland advanced through the first two rounds by beating Ferris State in the opening round 62-50, then took down Northern Michigan 68-45 Saturday night. The Eagles are 32-3 and have won 26 straight games, not losing since early December. GLVC Player of the Year Zoe Miller has averaged 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds over the two NCAA Tournament games. Lydia Sweeney has scored in double-figures in both games, with Lexi Howe, Morgan Yoder, and Sarah McKee also scored in double-figures in one of the games. Their defense is among the best in the country, allowing just 49.9 points a game, ranking them second in the country. The 67 points they gave up to GVSU was the second-highest total they have allowed all year, and it was third-lowest total the Lakers have tallied this year.
