Lakers Sweep Day One at The Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Grand Valley State softball team swept day one at The Spring Games Saturday (March 1) morning in Clermont, Florida. The Lakers improved to 4-6 on the season after defeating Franklin Pierce 1-0 and Western Oregon 11-1 in six innings.
 
Game One vs Franklin Pierce – W, 1-0
 
Elizabeth Wesoloski scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning by launching her first career home run as a Laker to left field. Nevaeh Ingram tossed her second complete game shutout in the circle allowing five hits with eight strikeouts. Eliana Eiland went 2-3 at the plate, while Kylie SInal added a hit in the win.
 
Game Two vs Western Oregon – W, 11-1 (6-Innings)
 
GVSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Faith Edwards singled to center field and stole second base during the next at bat. Two batters later, Elizabeth Wesoloski singled to left field to score Edwards for the game's first run. The Lakers would score two runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Eliana Eiland scored to make it 2-0 on an RBI groundout and Kylie Sinal singled to left field to score Morgan Spicer to make it 3-0.
 
The Lakers would score four runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Wesoloski drove in her third RBI of the game with a double to center field to score Spicer. MaryJane Goodman singled to center field to score Wesoloski. Two batters later, Allyson Theunick notched her first career RBI with a single to center field that scored Goodman Madelynn Pope singled and stole second base which allowed Theunick to score from third.
 
GVSU would add four more runs in the sixth inning to take an 11-0 lead. Spicer hit a sacfrice fly to left field that allowed Faith Edwards to score from third base. Goodman singled later in the inning to score Wesoloski to make it 9-0. Theunick singled in the next at bat to center field to score the pinch runner Liv Regenfuss. Pope would bring across the 11th run of the game with an RBI single to left field to score Christine Duch. Western Oregon would add one run in the bottom of the sixth, but GVSU would hold them off to claim the 10-run mercy after six innings. 
 
Kylie Swierkos got the start in the circle and earned her first win of the season after tossing five innings allowing no runs off two hits with two strikeouts. Elizabeth Wesoloski went 3-4 with three runs batted in, one double and a run scored. Faith Edwards hit 3-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. MaryJane Goodman batted 3-4 at the plate with two tuns batted in and one run scored. Madelynn Pope notched three hits with one RBI and two stolen bases. Allyson Theunick added two hits, two runs batted in and a run scored. Morgan Spicer hit a double with two runs scored and one RBI.
 
The Lakers be back for day two at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida tomorrow (March 2) morning when they face Wilmington (Del.) at 9:00 AM and Concordia – St. Paul at 11:30 AM. Both games will be played at Legends Way Complex.
