CLERMONT, Fla. – The Grand Valley State softball moved to 5-7 on the season after splitting a pair of games on day two of The Spring Games in Flordia Sunday (March 2) morning. The Lakers fell to Wilmington 2-0 in the first game and bounced back to defeat Concordia – St. Paul in game two.
Game One vs Wilmington (Del.) – L, 2-0
Wilmington scored both of their two runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Wildcats opened the scoring with a solo home run to left field and added a second run later in the inning off an RBI single up the middle.
Karli Dorr got the start in the circle and tossed all six innings allowing two hits with seven strikeouts. Dorr also went 2-3 at the plate with a pair of singles.
Faith Edwards and
Morgan Spicer each batted 1-2 with two walks.
Game Two vs Concordia – St. Paul – W, 8-3
Concordia – St. Paul opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning with a two-run home run to left field. GVSU quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at two.
Madelynn Pope put the Lakers on the board with an RBI triple to right center to score
Liv Regenfuss. Next batter,
Eliana Eiland singled up the middle to score Pope from third to tie the game.
GVSU erupted for five runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-2 lead.
Faith Edwards gave the Lakers their first lead of the game with an RBI groundout to score Regenfuss. Pope scored during the next at bat off a Concordia – St. Paul error to make it 4-2 GVSU. Next at bat,
Elizabeth Wesoloski doubled down the left field line to score both Eiland and Spicer.
Kylie Sinal would add the fifth run of the inning for the Lakers off an RBI single up the middle to score the pinch runner
Erin Newman.
GVSU would add another run in the fifth inning to make it 8-2. Pope would notch her third hit of the game and second RBI of the game with a single to right center to score Regenfuss. Concordia – St. Paul would add one run in the sixth inning to make it 8-3 GVSU.
Nevaeh Ingram got the start in the circle and earned the win (3-2) after tossing all seven innings allowing three runs off six hits with five strikeouts.
Madelynn Pope batted 3-3 with a triple, two RBI's and two runs scored.
Eliana Eiland went 2-3 with one RBI and a run scored.
Kylie Sinal hit 2-4 with a run batted in, while
Liv Regenfuss went 1-1 at the plate with a double, three runs scored and two walks.
GVSU will be back for two more games tomorrow (March 3) morning in Clermont, Florida. The Lakers will face in-region foe Ashland at 9:00 AM and Southern New Hampshire at 11:15 AM.
