Lakers Dominate No. 16 Ferris State 94-62 Saturday

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team closed out the weekend homestand with a dominant 94-62 win over No. 16 Ferris State Saturday (Feb. 8) afternoon. GVSU improves to 12-10 on the season and 8-6 in the GLIAC and pick up their consecutive win over a ranked opponent.
 
Trevor Smith Jr. led all scorers with 17 points on 7-10 shooting with a perfect 3-3 shooting from three-point range. Smith Jr. grabbed three rebounds and led GVSU with three assists. Kaden Brown scored 15 points on 5-11 shooting with two three-pointers and four rebounds. Jalen Charity notched 14 points and swiped three steals shooting 2-4 from deep. Cam Regnerus tied a career high 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds with two blocks and one steal.
 
GVSU held all Ferris State players to single digits in scoring. The Lakers shot 46% from the field and 42% from three. Ferris State shot 31% from the field and 28% from three. GVSU dominated the glass, outrebounding Ferris State 50-35 and 17-15 in offensive rebounds. The Lakers outscored Ferris State 30-24 in the paint.
 
GVSU would get off to a hot start and would not look back by never trailing in the game. The Lakers jumped out to an early 8-2 lead off back-to-back three-pointers by William Dunn and Smith Jr. in the first two possessions. Charity would clean up an offensive rebound and layup to force Ferris State to call an early timeout just two minutes in. The Lakers would quickly push the lead to double digits off two made free throws by Regnerus just five minutes in. 
 
The Lakers would go on an 11-0 run in five minutes to take their largest lead of the game at 37-19 with 2:56 to play in the opening half. Smith Jr. would knock down a three-pointer with five seconds left in the half to send GVSU to the break leading by 17 points.
 
In the second half, Ferris State would score the first bucket, but the Lakers would then go on a 14-1 run to take a commanding 59-31 lead. Brown would knock down a three followed by a made layup by Mason Docks pushed the lead to 30 with just over 14 minutes to play. GVSU would keep the lead to over 20 points the rest of the way and would take their largest lead of the game at 35 points off a Marcus Gray II three with just over a minute remaining. Javion Otten would put the exclamation on the win with a dunk with just 25 seconds left as the Lakers would claim the 32-point win.
 
GVSU will head on the road next week when they take on Purdue Northwest and Parkside. The Lakers will face Purdue Northwest on Thursday (Feb. 13) at 8:00 PM ET and then head over to face Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Saturday (Feb. 15) at 4:00 PM ET. Both games will be streamed live on FloSports and can be listened live on Thunder Country 107.3.
