HAMMOND, Ind. – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team picked up an important win on the road defeating Purdue Northwest 88-81 Thursday (Feb. 13) night. The Lakers improve to 13-10 on the season and 9-6 in the GLIAC.
The Lakers had a season best six players score in double figures.
Kaden Brown led the Lakers in scoring with 22 points on 8-14 shooting from the field with six made shots from three-point range. Brown has knocked down at least four three-pointers in nine games now this season.
Charles Turner tied a career high 14 points and grabbed five rebounds hitting three shots from behind the arc.
Shamus Thompson scored a career high 12 points on 4-4 shooting with six rebounds and three steals.
Jalen Charity and
Mason Docks each scored 12 points. Docks led GVSU with five assists while Charity hauled down six rebounds.
Cam Regnerus scored 10 points for the second straight game and grabbed seven rebounds.
GVSU shot 41% from the field and 50% (11-22) from three-point range. The Lakers dished out 15 assists with 10 coming in the second half. Purdue Northwest shot 43% from the field and 36% from three. GVSU outrebounded Purdue Northwest 45-42 and 20-17 in offensive rebounds. The Lakers outscored the Pride 36-32 in the paint.
The Lakers jumped out to an early lead with opening buckets by Thompson and and Regnerus in the first three minutes. The Pride would take their first lead at 12-11 seven minutes in but Thompson quickly put the Lakers back in front, knocking down a pair of free throws.
Both teams traded buckets over five minutes of play. Purdue Northwest would take their largest lead of the game at 32-25 with over five minutes remaining in the first half. GVSU responded to cut the deficit to one off back-to-back three-pointers by Brown. Brown would knock down another three to tie the game at 36-36 with 3:26 to play in the first. After four straight points by Purdue Northwest, GVSU ended the half on a 6-0 run off buckets by Docks and Thompson to take a 42-40 lead into the break.
Purdue Northwest started the second half with a made three-pointer, but the Lakers answered with a three-pointer by Charity and layup by
William Dunn to go up 47-43. The Pride would get the Laker lead down to three, but Brown answered with his fourth three-pointer of the game to up the lead to six with 17 minutes to play,
The two teams would trade buckets as GVSU would see their lead go down to one three times over a two-minute span. With under 12 minutes to play, GVSU would go on a 7-0 run with a Brown three, pair of free throws by Thompson and a driving layup by Brown to give the Lakers their largest lead of the game at eight with nine minutes remaining.
Purdue Northwest would go on a 6-0 run to bring the lead back to two, but the Lakers would have the answer again by going on a 6-0 run off a dunk by Regnerus and layups by Docks and Smith Jr. GVSU would push the lead to double figures with 2:27 with a Docks jumper in the paint which would seal the win for GVSU. The Lakers would knock down free throws to close it out and claimed the seven point win on the road.
The Lakers will close out their regular season road schedule on Saturday (Feb. 15) when they travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin to take on Parkside. Tipoff is set for 4:00 PM ET / 3:00 PM CT. The game will be streamed live on FloSports and can be listened live on Thunder Country 107.3.
