ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team closed out the weekend with a 76-68 win over Saginaw Valley State Saturday (Feb. 22) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 14-12 overall and 10-8 in the GLIAC.
Jalen Charity led GVSU in scoring for the third straight game with 15 points shooting 2-2 from three-point range and a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line.
Mason Docks also scored 15 points on 4-8 shooting from the field and 5-7 shooting from the free throw line. Docks led the Lakers with six assists.
Cam Regnerus added eight points, six rebounds and two blocks.
Shamus Thompson led the Lakers with 10 rebounds.
GVSU shot 34% from the field, while holding SVSU to 33% shooting from the field and 20% from three. The Lakers outrebounded the Cardinals 48-41 and 17-9 in offensive rebounds. Both teams scored 22 points in the paint, while GVSU scored 24 fast break points to the Cardinals 10.
GVSU started the game on a 7-0 run off a three-pointer by
Trevor Smith Jr. and layup by Thompson. The Lakers would push the lead to eight with 13 minutes to play in the first half off a dunk by Thompson. Saginaw Valley State would cut the Laker lead to five with just over five minutes to go in the half, but GVSU quickly answered with a 4-0 run off back-to-back buckets by Docks. SVSU would go on a 6-0 run to pull within three, but the Lakers answered by ending the half on an 8-0 run to take an 11-point lead at the break off a three by Smith Jr.
After both teams went two minutes exchanging buckets to begin the second half, GVSU went on a 9-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at 47-31.
Kaden Brown would knock down a three-pointer to push the lead to 19 with just under 14 minutes remaining. Charity would knock down a pair of free throws five minutes later to increase the lead to 20 points for the first time in the game.
Three minutes later, Docks would go on a 5-0 run by himself of a three-pointer and pair of made shot from the line to push the lead to 24 with 6:30 to play. Docks would score the next five points for GVSU, making it 10 straight points scored for the Lakers to keep the lead over 20 points. SVSU would go on a small run to end the game to get the Laker lead to single digits, but GVSU would be able to hang on for the eight-point win.
GVSU will close out the regular season next week when they host davenport and Roosevelt. The Lakers will welcome Davenport to Allendale on Tuesday (Feb. 25) at 8:00 PM and will end the regular season at home against Roosevelt on Saturday, March 1
