Lakers Knock Off #15 Ferris State

ALLENDALE, MICH. – In front of the ninth-largest crowd in program history, the Grand Valley State women's volleyball team pulled off a five-set upset over 15th-ranked Ferris State. With 1,012 fans in attendance, the Lakers completed the season sweep of the Bulldogs, moving to 15-7 on year and 9-3 in league play.
 
After Ferris State took the opening set 25-17, the Lakers responded with the next two, winning 25-13, 25-21. The Bulldogs tied the match with a 25-16 set four win, before GVSU finished it off with a 15-11 win.
 
After GVSU went up 7-4 in the opening set, the Bulldogs responded with a 13-3 run, going up 17-10. GVSU was able to get within five points, but never any closer, dropping the opening set. With FSU leading the second set 4-3, it was the Lakers' turn to go on a run, scoring six straight points to take a 9-4 lead. The Bulldogs could never recover, dropping the second set, tying the match at one.
 
In the third set, each team took turns going on mini runs, trading turns taking the lead. Eventually, with the game tied at 21, GVSU ended the game on a 4-0 run, winning on consecutive aces from Meghan O'Sullivan. The two teams were tied at eight in the fourth set, the Bulldogs ripped off an 8-2 run, going up 16-10. GVSU scored twice more to get within four, but FSU ended the set on a 9-4 run, forcing a fifth set.
 
Grand Valley State started the fifth set leading 8-4, with the two teams switching benches. The Bulldogs got back within two points at 11-9, but couldn't draw any closer, with GVSU ending on a 4-2 run, capped off by a Kate Goudreau kill.
 
Kennedy Arp posted 15 kills on a .393 hitting percentage, adding four total blocks. Meghan O'Sullivan recorded 14 kills, six digs, and served two aces, swinging .333. Brianna Stawski tallied 10 kills and four total blocks, with Kate Goudreau totaling nine kills. Gabby Orlet dished out a career-high 45 assists, adding 13 digs. Lexi Armstrong had 15 digs and Kendall Stover recorded 14. Armstrong and Grace Busold each served three aces.
